Another brutal employment report today: Employers have cut
nearly 240,000 jobs in the first three months of this year,
including 80,000 in March. Manufacturing jobs counted for 60%
of the loss.

We’ll have the latest details and a look at what’s ahead for
working men and women in this country. Plus:

* The National Chamber of Commerce is appealing the Arizona law
punishing employers who hire illegal aliens. Their claim:
States have no business passing laws based on federal
immigration law. We’ll have a full report.

* Heavily-armed drug traffickers are targeting Tucson, Arizona
to conduct their crimes because prosecutions there are few and
far between. One congressman said at Justice Department budget
hearing that a frustrated Border Patrol has told him that
Tucson’s U.S. Attorney refuses to prosecute cases involving
less than 500 pounds of drugs.

* Last month, Food & Water Watch issued a report revealing that
27 chicken plants in 16 states failed at least one salmonella
test in 2006 or 2007. Food regulators finally issued a public
health alert involving processed poultry products—but only
after coming under pressure, and only after two consumers
contracted salmonella.

* In our weekly tribute to the men and women who serve our
nation in uniform, we’ll have the story of Sgt. Omar Hernandez.
Hernandez came to the United States from Mexico with his family
when he was just six months old. At 19, he joined the army to
serve his adopted country. On his third tour in Iraq,
Hernandez’ patrol came under fire. Wounded, he risked his life
to rescue two members of the Iraqi police. He was awarded the
Silver Star.
