ILLEGAL immigrants were found hidden inside a consignment of nappies.

The two Vietnamese men were discovered by immigration officials using carbon dioxide probes to search a Bolton-bound lorry in Calais. Following the discovery, the two men were handed over to the French authorities.

A UK Border Agency spokesman said: "Since April 2008, almost 300,000 freight vehicles were screened to check they were not harbouring illegal immigrants, and we stopped 6,734 individual attempts by people trying to cross the Channel illegally."

As a result of separate operations by immigration officials in Greater Manchester two businesses have been told they could face fines for employing illegal workers.

At Ironmasters in Bell Street, Oldham, a Pakistani national was arrested and procedures have been put in place to have him deported.

Three Pakistani nationals were arrested at the Cheetham Chippy in Cheetham Hill Road, following a second raid.

One of the three men has claimed asylum, but the other two are awaiting removal from the country.

Businesses which employ illegal workers can face a fine of up to £10,000 if they are found not to have done the proper checks.
