YORKTOWN - An Ossining man who failed to appear in court to answer an attempted-rape charge has been arrested on a warrant and is being held at the Westchester County jail, police said today.

Manuel Zhingre, 37, of 15 Ellis Place failed to appear Oct. 23 in Yorktown Court to answer a felony charge of attempted first-degree rape, police said.

Zhingre had been arrested in May 2008 after police said he attempted to assault a woman in front of her four children in her Mohegan Lake home. He was released after posting $10,000 bail but failed to appear in court in October, police said.

Yorktown police issued a warrant and Zhingre was picked up by the U.S. Marshals Service and turned over yesterday to Yorktown Detective Timothy Tausz, police said.

A Yorktown police spokesman said information was not available on where and how Zhingre was taken into custody.

Zhingre was arraigned before Town Justice William Gerstenzang and sent to the county jail without bail.

He is due back in Yorktown Town Court on Feb. 17 at 6 p.m.

He is in the country illegally and immigration officials have placed a hold on him, according to the Westchester County Department of Correction.
