LA JOYA - A La Joya teen will soon begin serving a seven-year prison term. He pleaded guilty to driving a marijuana-packed car into the river, leaving his passenger to drown.

While most high school students are back to school from Spring Break, Fernando Cuevas Camacho is on his way to prison after being convicted of murder.

Sheriff's deputies say Camacho led authorities on a chase that ended near the old Pepe's on the River, south of Mission. Camacho drove his car packed with drugs into the Rio Grande. He got out of the car, but his passenger did not. Mario Alberto Gonzalez Cruz stayed strapped to the passenger seat and drowned.

Constables told us the two men were inexperienced and new to the smuggling underworld. They likely did not know what they were doing.

Cruz was a Mexican national who had been deported out of the United States several times before he was killed.
