Brewer talks immigration law and sales tax

PHOENIX - On Sunday night, Governor Jan Brewer was in-studio with News/Talk 92.3 KTAR's Jay Lawrence, where she talked about two of the hottest issues in the state right now: Arizona's new immigration law and a proposed tax increase.

Brewer said that despite what critics of the bill say, racial profiling is not allowed by Senate Bill 1070. However she acknowledged that racial profiling could still happen.

"You know, and I know, that there are rogue people out there, for whatever the reasons, that go rogue in any profession," Brewer said. "But it's not going to happen because of 1070."

Brewer also said that former governor Janet Napolitano asked the federal government for help with illegal immigration when she was in Arizona. Things are different now though, Brewer said.

"Obviously now, we know she's changed positions, not only to Secretary (of Homeland Security), but her position on illegal trespassing into our state," Brewer said. "(She) doesn't seem to want to even respond to our letters to her. She's turned a blind eye."

Brewer then talked about a proposed sales tax increase on Tuesday's special election ballot.

On Tuesday, Arizona voters will decide on a one-cent increase in the state sales tax for three years. The money will provide an estimated $1 billion for state coffers.

Brewer, who pushed the tax to the ballot, said she is against new taxes, especially with an election approaching, but had to act. She says that without approval of the tax, the state's education and public safety systems will suffer greatly.

"When you're faced with the reality of where Arizona is and knowing that core services that government provides were going to be decimated, you just automatically know that it's not about Jan Brewer anymore, you got to do what's right," Brewer said.

Brewer said that the state's economy will suffer along with its education and public safety systems.

"As the recruiter trying to bring businesses into the state, they don't want to come if we don't have safety on our streets and if we don't have a well-educated, skilled workforce," Brewer said.

Brewer is more worried about the effect that not passing the sales tax increase will have than she is about boycotts because of the state's new immigration law.

"In regards to people boycotting, and not moving their businesses here, it's not going to probably come to any fruition," Brewer said.

Which, btw, is standard practice in criminal investigation. When the feds are looking for white-collar criminals do they go to El Paso?
