Arizona Democrats urge Obama not to sue over controversial immigration law
    By Sean J. Miller - 06/23/10 06:00 AM ET

Arizona Democrats facing tough reelection races are distancing themselves from the Obama administration as it prepares to file a lawsuit against the state over its controversial immigration law.

Rep. Harry Mitchell (D-Ariz.) on Monday sent a sharply worded letter to President Barack Obama urging him not to sue.

“I believe your administration’s time, efforts and resources would be much better spent securing the border and fixing our broken immigration system,â€

YOU'VE GOT THAT RIGHT THE ONE THING I DON'T AGREE WITH THEM ON IS OUR IMMIGRATION SYSTEM IS NOT BROKEN, AND I'M REAL TIRED OF HEARING THEM SAY THAT. THE ONLY THING WRONG WITH IT IS, ITS NOT BEING ENFORCED AND TO THE DEMS RUNNING FOR RE-ELECTION IN NOV. I SAY, LET HIM GO AHEAD A SUE ARIZONA. BY THEM BEGGING HIM NOT TO DOES NOT MEAN THEY WILL WIN THEIR ELECTIONS. AND, SOMEONE IN GOVERNMENT NEEDS TO PUT MEXICO IN ITS PLACE.

We have to remember that these people are targets in their communities and the Mexican bandits themselves could come across the line and finish them once and for all. I am not in any position to judge how much they are trying to represent the sentiments of the people they represent or the sentiment of the Democratic party. It is not good governance to sue a state that is already broke - on that we can all agree and I hope this is Obummer's undoing. He has not earned his position and his choices prove it over and over and over ad nauseum. He does not even have good guidance.

Mostly lately the tension in the state is bad between Mexican and non-Mexican as well as between Mexican descent citizens and illegals. Some people simply avoid contact at all and others are especially friendly (uncomfortably so) - feeling under pressure due to their heritage or due to their feeling apologetic about our racist government - bleh. So in a way everything is stickily sickly sweet for a minute - like an OD on white sugar. So there is a pressure on the legitimate community of Mexican descent but honestly my family is not feeling it and throughout the state they are sick of it and want the illegals gone. I guess my family has experienced a lifetime of rejection from the illegals due to being assimilated and when you are no longer welcome in your home town and you are retirement age - just because you are an American-Mexican - nope - everybody in my family is totally sick of it and do not feel pressure to be ambassadors for any community. It is interesting in a way because all these years we have been politically very disagreeing but on this we all agree and it feels good to be on the same page for once. I'm speaking for my Mexican Arizona family. My other family and I do not even discuss this.

The only thing "broken" about the imigration systme is the Federal Government's refusal to enforce the laws to accomodate big business and Unions at the expense of U.S. JMO

3 Democrats urge U.S. to not sue Arizona

    by Dan Nowicki - Jun. 27, 2010 12:00 AM
    The Arizona Republic

A trio of U.S. House Democrats from Arizona is making a last-ditch effort to discourage President Barack Obama's administration from suing the state over its controversial new illegal-immigration law.

Reps. Ann Kirkpatrick, Harry Mitchell and Gabrielle Giffords support a comprehensive approach to border security and immigration reform, something Congress has failed to pass despite years of trying. All three, who could find themselves in difficult re-election battles this year, want the administration to focus on practical steps to repair the broken U.S. immigration system and shore up border security instead of suing Arizona.

A federal legal challenge could come from the Justice Department as early as this week.

Critics call Arizona's law, which goes into effect July 29, unconstitutional and warn that it could lead to racial profiling. The law says that an officer engaged in a lawful stop, detention or arrest shall, when practicable, ask about a person's legal status when reasonable suspicion exists that the person is in the United States illegally.

Kirkpatrick said the law stemmed from years of federal neglect of the U.S.-Mexico border.

"It is extremely frustrating that the administration is reacting to it by suing our state instead of dealing with the larger issues," she said in a statement. " . . . It is an empty, unproductive response to a challenge that needs a serious, effective resolution and requires all of our attention."

Kirkpatrick called on Obama and U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder "to abandon preparations for a lawsuit against Arizona, and to recommit to finding a national solution to fixing this national problem."

Mitchell made similar points in a letter to Obama dated Monday.

"The only thing that protracted litigation will do is once again demonstrate to Arizonans that Washington just doesn't get it," Mitchell wrote. "It will embolden those on all sides who prefer to grandstand and score political points instead of working toward real solutions. Arizonans are tired of the grandstanding, and tired of waiting for help from Washington."

C.J. Karamargin, a Giffords spokesman, said in a statement that Giffords "wants more federal agents on the Arizona border, not federal lawyers in court arguing with state lawyers about a law that will do nothing to increase public safety in the communities she represents."

    In other developments:

    • Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., took it upon himself to teach Milwaukee (Wis.) County Supervisor Peggy West a little about U.S. geography.

While discussing a possible boycott of Arizona over the immigration law, West on Thursday suggested she might be more comfortable with the measure if it had been enacted by Texas, which borders Mexico.

"But this is a state that is a ways removed from the border," West said of Arizona.

West later acknowledged misspeaking, but Kyl couldn't resist needling her with a letter - and a map.

"You will be interested to learn that Arizona does indeed share a border with Mexico," Kyl wrote Friday. "I have enclosed a map for your convenience. I hope you will take the time to actually read the Arizona law before formulating an opinion about it and become familiar with our country's geography and the challenges that our border states face."

    • Mark Kelly, Giffords' NASA-astronaut husband, appeared Thursday on Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report," giving comedian Stephen Colbert pointers on how to operate a space shuttle.

"Pitch forward, houses get bigger," Kelly said while inside a shuttle simulator. "Pull back, the houses get smaller."

I have always had a heart for the situation of the illegal and try to remember that if I were born there I also would do my best to get here. But their pi$$-poor attitudes and their ciminality has hardened my heart against them. 30 years ago it was more like the caricature that everybody is defending - but now, with too many of them has come the militancy, the constant verbal abuse, the overt race hatred and the demanding and the rapes and murders. They have no intention of being part of this nation. We have no intention of giving up our state. THEY NEED TO GO.
