AZ: Bill would void out-of-state driver licenses
Bill would void out-of-state driver licenses
Howard Fischer
New Mexico driver licenses would be as useful as playing cards in Arizona under the terms of legislation being pushed by two Republican legislators. Ditto for licenses issued by Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Oregon, Texas, Washington and the District of Columbia.
But the move, pushed as another method of cracking down on those who enter the United States illegally, could have serious repercussions for Arizonans driving elsewhere.
Senate Bill 1020, crafted by Reps. Warde Nichols of Chandler and Russell Pearce of Mesa, would spell out that driver licenses from states that allow illegal immigrants to obtain them cannot be recognized in Arizona as proof of identification by any local or state government office.
