Border Patrol agents arrested four U.S. citizens Sunday evening on suspicion of trying to smuggle 15 illegal entrants through a checkpoint on Arizona 90 in the back of a U-Haul truck, the agency said.

At about 5 p.m. on Arizona 90 a few miles north of the intersection with Arizona 82, agents pulled over the truck with a man and woman in the cab for further inspection, said Gustavo Soto, Border Patrol Tucson Sector spokesman. They found 15 Mexican illegal entrants in the back, he said.

The two U.S. citizens in the cab, a 36-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman, told agents they had been hired by two others to drive the group north, Soto said. They said the pair who hired them would be coming through the checkpoint soon.

Sure enough, they did, and the couple identified them for Border Patrol agents, he said.

All four were arrested in connection with attempting to smuggle illegal entrants and were turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement for prosecution, Soto said. Their names were not released.

The illegal entrants were processed for deportation, he said. A few were likely held as witnesses, he said.
