(Springfield, MO) -- We may get a better idea this week on how members of the Springfield city council will vote on an illegal immigration law.

Mayor Jim O'Neal wants the city to talk about the issue and discuss which way each council person is leaning at this week's council lunch.

A new ordinance would require businesses to make sure they aren't hiring illegal workers through an electronic verification program.

The Ozarks Minutemen submitted the initiative petition after gathering enough signatures.

Council must decide to pass the ordinance, or send the bill to a public vote of the people.

It's a controversial issue in that some believe it promotes racial profiling while others say it prevents counterfeit document issues.

Council will meet at noon on Tuesday for lunch and then vote the following Monday.
