BREWSTER — A village man charged with beating up his girlfriend's ex is being held today at the Putnam County jail on a federal immigration warrant after jail officials determined he was in the country illegally from Guatemala, police said.

Officer Al Villani of the Brewster police responded to 51 Prospect St., around 6:45 a.m. Tuesday on a report of an assault, Chief Officer John Del Gardo said today.
Villani determined that Moises Diaz, 35, of Clark Place, Mahopac, had gone to the residence to get money that his ex-girlfriend supposedly owed him.
Diaz rang the bell, knocked on the door, then began banging on it repeatedly when no one responded.
After a few minutes, the woman's new boyfriend, Walter Ricardo Vasquez-Recinos, 27, of 51 Prospect St., came out and assaulted Diaz, punching him in the eye and injuring his shoulder, Del Gardo said.
Police responded and charged Vasquez-Recinos with third-degree assault, a misdemeanor. He was sent to the county jail in lieu of $100 cash bail.
However, jail officials, suspecting that Vasquez-Recinos is in the county illegally, notified federal immigration officials, who confirmed it and placed a immigration-detainer warrant on him. The warrant ensures that he will remain in custody even if he posts bail.

The only thing that changed is that after that incident the local media was somewhat forced to actually report about the things IAs were doing in the area. Up until that happened I would bet this wouldn't have been given any attention. This perp wouldn't have been run through ICE either.

    That's my hunch.
