Gordon compares Arpaio to sheriffs of Deep South

The ongoing feud between Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon and Sheriff Joe Arpaio has started again. This time its Gordon's comments that has stirred up controversy.

After addressing participants at the Reform Not Raids National Summit Friday morning, Gordon compared Arpaio to the racist sheriffs in the Deep South during the civil rights movement.

Gordon admitted the sheriff isn't using fire hoses or attack dogs, but he does think the sheriff is targeting people because of the color of their skin.

"You don't see Anglos being herded around in handcuffs. You don't see Anglos being arrested in sweeps," Gordon told KTAR.

Gordon also said Arpaio and his supporters are terrifying brown-skinned people.

"I saw the same thing that everyone here saw, no matter what ones view is," Gordon told KTAR. "Families terrified, children terrified, families split up."

Gordon went on to say some of Arpaio's supporters are known Neo-Nazis.

Arpaio fired back at Gordon's comments.

"He has no knowledge of what's going on and I think the people of Maricopa County and the United States of America understand his garbage," he said.

Arpaio added Gordon's comments are an insult to him and his deputies.

"This mayor, once again, with all his garbage that he reads in the paper, is trying to take me down again and my dedicated personnel," he said.
