NY: Group to lead march, rally for immigrant rights
Group to lead march, rally for immigrant rights
(July 9, 2007) — The Rochester Alliance for Immigrant Rights (RAIR) is leading a march and rally on Tuesday in protest of the treatment of immigrant workers who were arrested last month at a Pittsford restaurant and now face deportation.
The demonstration is slated to begin with picketing at the County Sheriff’s offices, 130 S. Plymouth Ave., at 5 p.m.
At 5:30 p.m., the group will march to offices of the county legislature, 29 W. Main St., organizers stated in a news release.
The purpose of the demonstration is to stop the raids and deportations of immigrant workers. In addition, the group is protesting the racial profiling of people with brown skin by law enforcement agencies.
On June 17, 12 Hispanic immigrants were arrested at 3:30 a.m., where they were installing ceramic tile during the construction of a Cheesecake Factory restaurant in Pittsford. The workers were arrested by sheriff’s deputies and Border Patrol agents and turned over to federal immigration and customs enforcement officers.
Group members maintain that dozens of such incidents happen every day throughout the region and that people with brown skin are routinely stopped in stores, bus stations, or on the street. If those who are stopped fail to produce the right documents, they face immediate arrest and eventual deportation, organizers said.
