House seeks worker checks on legal status (SAVE Act)

House seeks worker checks on legal status
    By Herman Wang

WASHINGTON — About 100 House members will attempt to do what the Senate could not do this year: pass an immigration reform bill.

The Secure America through Verification and Enforcement Act, recently introduced by Rep. Heath Shuler, D-N.C., would require employers to verify that their workers are here legally through an electronic database, authorize money to add 8,000 border patrol agents over five years and increase aerial surveillance of the Southwest border.

    “This is, I feel, a common-sense approach,â€

ASHEVILLE — Western North Carolina employers and Latino advocates have qualms about U.S. Rep. Heath Shuler’s immigration reform legislation, reflecting what some say are obstacles to the bill’s passage.

The plan would beef up border security while requiring employers to use a federal database to verify that their workers are in the U.S. legally.

Shuler, D-Waynesville, said the plan has broad support, citing backing from business interests and 112 House co-sponsors, both Republican and Democrat. He said he hopes to bring the legislation up for a vote early next year. The bill was introduced in the Senate Nov. 15 and in the House Nov. 6.

“If it goes on the House floor, it will be passed,â€

But employers like Mike Long, president of Taylor & Murphy Construction Co. in Asheville, say they doubt Shuler’s proposal will become law because the country can’t afford to lose such a large portion of its work forceHe said 25 to 30 percent of his company’s workers are Hispanic, and he stressed that his company completes all required federal paperwork, pays taxes and is audited every other year.

He can't afford to lose his cheap slave labor, is what that statement is all about. WE need to close off ALL immigration for a while until this country stabilizes and business' have a chance to adapt to the changes that will be made from no more illegals. We don't need any more temporary worker forces.

Funny how Stephen is the one that the Tennessee Media goes to for the spinning on the open borders side. He makes the same circular arguments over and over again. He is fun to debate, but in the end no one changes their mind. He just thinks we, the American citizen, should pay for everything for illegal alien lawbreakers. I guess the Tennessee legislature will be his target again this year to oppose any and all bills to save the state from the illegal alien invasion.
