PHOENIX - Sen. John McCain routed conservative challenger J.D. Hayworth on Tuesday in the Republican primary in what could be the final campaign for the former GOP presidential nominee.

McCain spent more than $20 million to beat back an aggressive challenge from Hayworth, who relentlessly attacked the senator for his shifting stance on immigration and sought to tap into the anti-incumbent rage that has taken down other lawmakers in 2010.

Two years after his bitter loss in pursuit of the White House, the 73-year-old McCain now begins a final 10-week push and will be the heavy favorite. The Democratic race was still undecided, but whoever emerges will have an uphill fight in heavily conservative Arizona.

That means McCain will likely be back in the Senate next year, raising a number of questions about the future of a gridlocked Washington.

Will he work with Democrats again? Will he play a role in immigration legislation? Will he be Obama's chief nemesis?

"My guess is that he will move back a little bit to trying to be a consensus builder, someone who will try to bring Democrats and Republicans together," said Bruce Merrill, a former pollster and McCain staffer who was surprised by the senator's sudden move to the right. "I hope so."

Hayworth, a former congressman and talk-radio host, had hoped to win over conservatives frustrated with McCain's famous willingness to buck his party and work with Democrats on issues like campaign finance, immigration and climate change.

In response, McCain abandoned his maverick label and cast aside one of the most powerful brands in American politics as he fought to reassure conservatives they could trust him, namely by taking a harder stance on border issues amid the debate over Arizona's immigration law.

McCain also portrayed Hayworth as a big-spending creature of Washington and a late-night infomercial "huckster."

In 2007, Hayworth appeared in an infomercial pitching free government money on behalf of a company accused of swindling customers out of thousands of dollars.

Four Democrats are vying to take on McCain, and they all lack the broad name recognition of McCain and the huge bank account that the incumbent has from his 2008 presidential campaign.

McCain has never lost an election in his home state and has rarely faced serious opposition since he succeeded Barry Goldwater in the Senate in 1986.

In an e-mail to reporters Tuesday morning, McCain spokesman Brian Rogers recalled a half-dozen ways the campaign exploited Hayworth missteps to knock him to the ground, including the infomercial and his support of the birther movement questioning President Barack Obama's citizenship.

Rogers closed with this: "The Democrats will choose their nominee today. Who wants to be next?"

It is very disappointing, but what a great effort William and the ALIPACERS put forth to work for a different outcome. But remember, the people of Arizona are leading the way through the state legislation to help us in more ways than we can count. Who is know why Republicans in Arizona favored McCain over Hayworth when McCain has always supported Amnesty, which is such a betrayal of their best interest as well as ours. Voters are unpredictable at times, and sometimes, they just go with what they know, even if they don't agree with that candidate on everything.

Lets vow to support with all our hearts, soul, minds and deeds any and every state that passes a state immigration law as Arizona has done. Perhaps they know something about a McCain Epiphany that we didn't know before. Perhaps if they've been snookered by McCain on immigration, then Arizona is the one state that will deliver the payback McCain deserves and recall him.

The future is long and no good deed or good work goes unnoticed. The work everyone did to try to defeat McCain may not have defeated him, but perhaps it changed him. Lets hope for the best and keep the pressure on McCain to put Americans first and foremost, always and forever.

No, Hayworth sucked a little, McCain sucked massively. Arizonans should know that better than anyone. McCain is one of the main CAUSES of Arizona's invasion problem. They - 60% of AZ Repub/independent voters - just re-nominated the CAUSE of their invasion.

My condolences also to those Arizonans who fought the good fight, but I have no condolences for the 60% of Arizona repubs/independents who just voted to re-elect McAmnesty, or who didn't bother to vote.

No one is "callously dismissing the misery" of those victimized by the illegal invasion and a government that condones it. Those of us angry at the foolishness of re-nominating a CAUSE of the problem, are also dealing with the misery of an invasion that has now spread from the border states to us. We're more than aware we're in the same @#$% boat. But we didn't just vote to re-elect Mr. Amnesty.

I think it bears mention that there are an awful lot of Hispanic voters in Arizona with a vested interest in a McCain win, chain migration being at the forefront. Not all legal immigrants oppose "comprehensive immigration reform".

Not all Arizona voters are legal as well.

Never forget the electronic vote rigging can also play a role.

Wonder why McCain has been so sure of his victory ahead of the vote in spite of the widespread support for Hayworth? I personally think there was more to it than a smug candidate.

In January, Chuck Schumer and Barney Frank will propose universal voter registration. What is universal voter registration? It means all of the state laws on elections will be overridden by a federal mandate. The feds will tell the states: 'take everyone on every list of welfare that you have, take everyone on every list of unemployed you have, take everyone on every list of property owners, take everyone on every list of driver's license holders and register them to vote regardless of whether they want to be ...'


Fund anticipates that Congress will attempt to ram this legislation through, as with the health care bill. What a surprise! Fund covers the vote issue at greater length in his book, How the Obama Administration Threatens to Undermine Our Elections.

We need a sensible, reasonable approach to immigration. Washington and John McCain have failed us. For 28 years, McCain has taken all sides of the immigration debate while the problems have only gotten worse. In the meantime, Arizonans have been searching for answers. SB1070 is not the answer; it is a rash attempt to score political points. As a former Vice Mayor for the City of Tucson, I understand the importance of safety in our communities. SB1070 is an unfunded mandate and additional burden on local law enforcement at a time when every municipality in Arizona is struggling with budget cuts.

We must hire and train the appropriate number of border patrol agents and utilize technology to secure and monitor the border. Additionally, we must have a system in place for those who would like to come to our country legally, work, pay taxes, and return home to do so in order for our economy to function properly.

Those who are in our country illegally must be held accountable for breaking the law, but it would cost billions of taxpayer dollars to arrest or deport them all. We need a realistic solution so that those who work hard, pay back taxes, and contribute to society pay a fine and get in the back of the line to become U.S. citizens. Those who otherwise do not obey our laws should be deported immediately.


Glassman would ordinarily have no chance against McCain. But what if he were to alter his position on illegal immigration to a stricter approach? He should start running ads, saying that he now realizes how effective SB-1070 has been. Thousands of illegals have left AZ, saving Arizona taxpayers millions of dollars. He can say that he now realizes that law-enforcement officials will not be overburdened, with fewer illegals residing in the state. He can say that the economy will eventually rebound, and any new jobs created will go to unemployed Americans.

He could even scold the regular Democrat establishment in the public-service sector for secretly hoping for a massive, Federal Amnesty, who think that millions of newly legalized illegals will automatically vote for Democrat candidates. He can proudly proclaim, "That's not what America is all about".

Glassman should realize that we already have "a system in place for those who would like to come to our country legally, work, pay taxes, in order for our economy to function properly". It's called legal immigration. Come here legally.

Ironically, Glassman also states that "Washington and McCain have failed us". Glassman should get on McCain's case for McCain's failure to realize, until the Congressional 2007 Amnesty attempt had failed, that "Americans want the border secured first".

Perhaps Glassman can get some advice from Senator Byron Dorgan from North Dakota, one of the few Democrat Senators opposed to illegal immigration. (Ironically, Dorgan chose not to run for re-election this year).

What else can Glassman run on? The economy? ObamaCare? The prospect of raising taxes on Americans once again? He should use his imagination, and adopt a stricter stance on illegal immigration.

If Glassman wants to have any chance at all against McCain, he should try this novel approach. Otherwise, he'll simply lose in the normal fashion.

You can't trust Glassman. If I lived in Arizona I wouldn't vote for either one of them.

Well, what a sad, sad day for Arizona and for all Patriots who fought the good fight so bravely. Just think, it only cost 20 million to buy the Senate seat again. Think of our forefathers. I think they would be rolling over in their graves at the arrogant life long politicians who practically die in office. He who never would stoop to sling the mud around or stoop to that level really outdid himself. No one would have had a fighting chance. Too bad the people once again voted him back in.

How soon we forget and forgive. How much integrity does it take to return from Viet Nam, dump your sick wife, head to Arizona and marry Cindi, who is from mucho moola. When he was much younger he was friends with Charlie Keating who was connected to the Savings and Loan debacle that deprived many investors of their hard earned money. I recall he was part of the Keating 5. He had taken many trips and vacations with his family and was lucky he wasn't indicted after all the hearings. Sorry I don't believe he will keep his promise. Amnesty is what he has been all about. We will see how much honor and integrity and concern for the citizens he shows. It will be interesting to watch the process unfold. I for one was tired of always voting for the lesser of two evils to tow the party line. No more!!

Ok, so the Feds won't do anything, CA is over there welcoming them with open arms, they won't build the damn fence and all of a sudden the IA problem is all AZ's fault? This has NEVER been AZ problem, it is the Federal governments. We just take the brunt of it because our borders are unsecured.

McCain got just 56% of the vote. That means 44% voted for somebody else. That's almost 1 out of every 2 Republicans. Yes, McCain technically won the election but he spent 8 times as much as his nearest opponent.
