    Cruz Lies About Immigration Figures

Ted Cruz knows that if you’re going to win the Republican presidential nomination, you have to scare the hell out of primary voters. You have to build up some massive threat that only you can prevent

and Republican xenophobia and fear of outsiders makes that an easy task.

And in Cruz’ case, you do this by just plain lying about it, claiming that Obama is bringing in “millions” of illegal immigrants to do horrible things to the country.

Cruz also criticized more moderate Republicans for their stances on “amnesty” for undocumented immigrants, calling it “a defining issue in this election.”

“Barack Obama meant it when he said he wants to fundamentally transform this nation by letting millions of people into this country illegally from all over the world, making them citizens and doing to

America what was done to California,” he said. “He wants captive voters.”

And now, a word from reality. Illegal immigration under Obama has actually been a hell of a lot lower than under Bush. Even the anti-immigration Center for Immigration Studies admits that the rate of

illegal immigration into the country under Obama has averaged 300-400,000 people a year, while under Bush it averaged 500-600,000 per year. In fact, the net rate of illegal immigration — new arrivals

vs deportations — is at a virtual standstill and has been throughout Obama’s term in office:

The number of unauthorized immigrants living in the United States has stabilized since the end of the Great Recession and shows no sign of rising, according to new Pew Research Center estimates.

The marked slowdown in new arrivals means that those who remain are more likely to be long-term residents, and to live with their U.S.-born children.

There were 11.3 million unauthorized immigrants living in the U.S. in March 2013, according to a preliminary Pew Research Center estimate, about the same as the 11.2 million in 2012 and unchanged since 2009.

The population had risen briskly for decades before plunging during the Great Recession of 2007 to 2009.

The Obama administration deported a record 438,421 unauthorized immigrants in fiscal year 2013, continuing a streak of stepped up enforcement that has resulted in more than 2 million deportations since

Obama took office, newly released Department of Homeland Security data show…

Most of the growth in the number of deported immigrants has come from those deported for reasons other than a criminal conviction.

In 2013, 240,000 deported immigrants did not have a previous criminal conviction, up from 218,000 in 2012.

Meanwhile, the number of deportations of those with a criminal conviction has stalled at around 200,000 for the past two fiscal years.

One distinct feature of the record number of deportations is the increasing share of deportations by U.S. Customs and Border Protection after border apprehension.

In 2013, 25% of all deportations were carried out by the agency, up from 17% in 2012. Meanwhile, the number of deportations carried out by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement,

which deports people caught both at the border and the interior of the country, fell in 2013 compared with 2012.

Another change is that in 2013, a record 363,000 (83%) of deportations were carried out without appearing before a judge – either through an order issued by an enforcement agent

(called expedited removal) or by using a previous order of deportation (called reinstatement of final orders).

This is due to a 2005 shift in policy that has increased the likelihood of being deported after apprehension.

This notion that Obama has been opening the door to illegal immigration is not just wrong, it’s an absolute lie. Lies to create unjustified fear is Republican party’s primary campaign tactic.
