Here Are OUR 'Voter' Numbers Countering Pro-Amnesty March

Here Are OUR 'Voter' Numbers Countering the Pro-Amnesty 'March For America'

By Roy Beck, Wednesday, March 24, 2010, 10:42 AM EDT - posted on NumbersUSA

Our grassroots mobilization numbers are in for last weekend, and I have no doubt that there were far more of you standing up for 25 million Americans who can't find a full-time job than there were marchers on the National Mall demanding that the jobs stay with 8 million illegal aliens.

And when we just count voters among them and us, well . . . . . .

As has been well-documented, the big pro-amnesty march/rally on Sunday and the last two months of PR build-up across the country was backed by tens of millions of dollars from George Soros, Carnegie Foundation, Ford Foundation and the giant SEIU unions.

All that was available to back unemployed Americans was the volunteer personpower of compassionate, community-minded U.S. voters who answered our call to make their voices heard.

    And, boy, did you!

More than 7,000 of you signed up to visit the home offices of more than 400 Members of Congress last Friday.

More than 8,000 of you responded to our request for you to make phone calls into the DC offices of all 535 Members of Congress on Monday.

More than 90,000 came onto our website on Sunday while we were webcasting our interviews and coverage of the pro-amnesty march.

Our computerized telecommunication system processed 149,216 faxes into Congress during the Friday through Monday period.

Although some march enthusiasts have bandied about figures like 200,000 for the size of the march, most observers have put the number between 60,000 and 100,000. Our personal visits with officials who deal with these marches all the time and privately estimate based on how many big screens are put up, the parts of the Mall grid that are packed and the parts that are loosely filled, etc., it sounds like 60,000 is the more likely figure.

Whatever the actual number, which nobody knows, it was a big and impressive turnout.

And, as some of the pro-amnesty blogs have said in ridiculing NumbersUSA's efforts, riding a bus across America and spending a day or two in DC is a whole lot larger commitment than somebody sending a fax or phone call from home.

Nonetheless, candidates for office next fall ultimately have to care about only one thing about each person -- the vote.

It doesn't matter whether the person behind the vote came to DC or made a phone call, it all boils down to one vote per voter.

And that is where the scales tip decidely in our favor.

I can just about guarantee you that 98% or more of the people behind the numbers up there in those NumbersUSA bullet points are U.S. citizens who can vote.

    On the Mall Sunday?

Well, in order to vote, you have to be a U.S. citizen. To be a citizen, you have to pass an English test. We had a dozen people in multiple teams scattered throughout the rally and found that a high majority of those present could not communicate in English at all. Even if a lot of the marchers were legal residents, it is doubtful that many of them are citizens and voters.

The SEIU unions bused in a lot of mute human props (and I'm not talking about their mimes) for their theatre on the Mall. But will anybody in Congress really be more concerned about those non-voters than all the voters who visited, phoned and faxed their offices over our S.T.O.P. Amnesty in 4 Days campaign?

The pro-amnesty side may have the big bucks to generate a lot of op-eds from the elites and a lot of noise from non-voters, but most Members of Congress still know that most of their voters back home have views more in keeping with all the people who participated In NumbersUSA's four days of mobilized suppport for our 25 million Americans without a full-time job.

NPR Gives Roy Final Word In Coverage of Sunday's Amnesty March

Tuesday, March 23, 2010, 3:15 PM EDT - posted on NumbersUSA

Roy at the March for America

National Public Radio covered Sunday's Pro-Amnesty "March for America", and included a few quotes from NumbersUSA CEO and Founder Roy Beck. Roy explained why NumbersUSA covered the March and offered his conjecture on what will happen with immigration reform during the next few months.

    RENEE MONTAGNE, host:

The health care vote overshadowed a political drama just outside Congress. Thousands of immigrants and their supporters packed the National Mall. They hope to persuade President Obama to deliver on his campaign promise to overhaul the immigration system.

NPR's Jennifer Ludden was at the rally.

    (Soundbite of crowd chatter)

JENNIFER LUDDEN: The gathering felt like a picnic on the fringes, as families pushed strollers and spread out to soak up the sun. On the other side of a big stage and large video screen, it was more like a rock concert.

Unidentified Man #1: Si se puede!

    Unidentified Woman: Si se puede!

Unidentified Man #1: Si se puede!

    Unidentified Woman: Si se puede!

LUDDEN: Everyone squeezed tight, waving tiny American flags, and raising their arms to pass a gigantic U.S. flag around the diverse crowd. Organizers say activists came by bus and plane from more than 30 states. Speakers included a string of Democratic lawmakers, civil rights and religious leaders.

Unidentified Man #2: Look around. We are America.

    (Soundbite of cheers)

LUDDEN: But despite the festive atmosphere, many felt a deep sense of frustration. Saul Laneras(ph) is a day laborer who walked here from Long Island. He's disappointed that President Obama has not kept his pledge to legalize some 11 million undocumented immigrants.

Mr. SAUL LANERAS (Day Laborer): He mentioned 100 days. He mentioned one year. We are 15 months later, and he's not doing anything. We need him to take the leadership right now.

LUDDEN: In fact, in Mr. Obama's first year, deportations have increased to nearly 400,000. Construction worker Luis Medrano(ph) of Maryland lamented the separation of families in a hand-painted sign. It showed a family with an ax hanging over its head, an ax wielded by President Obama.

Mr. LUIS MEDRANO (Construction Worker): I've got friends living in the house where I live. They have being separated, you know, the kids living without his mom now. He's suffering.

LUDDEN: Medrano said the boy is six, and his mother was deported last year after immigration agents raided the store where she worked. Twenty-five-year-old Jessica Granados(ph) said undocumented people like her have gotten no relief from a constant state of fear. She takes out her cell phone to show me a rumor that spread in New Jersey last week via text message.

Ms. JESSICA GRANADOS: Yeah, right here.

    LUDDEN: What does it say?

Ms. GRANADOS: But it's in Spanish. It says Wal-Mart give authorizations to take some immigrants from the stores.

LUDDEN: Wal-Mart denied there were any immigration raids in its stores, but other New Jersey store owners reported a big drop in sales anyway, as people stayed home just in case.

Unions turned out in force. They are strong supporters of large-scale legalization, and many signs made the point that immigrants are workers and taxpayers. In a surprise videotaped message to the rally, President Obama himself criticized businesses who use illegal workers to game the system. But many also admitted that a biting recession and nearly 10 percent unemployment make their cause more difficult.

On the sidelines, Roy Beck watched the whole scene with bemusement. He heads Numbers USA, a grassroots lobbying group that wants to reduce all immigration.

Mr. ROY BECK (Numbers USA): Our core position is, is that those illegal aliens should be moved out of their jobs, and eight million Americans looking for work should be moved into them.

LUDDEN: In his video message, President Obama promised once again to try to seek bipartisan support for overhauling immigration this year. But Beck isn't worried, especially after the bruising fight over health care.

Mr. BECK: The administration, the Democratic leadership, they're not going to take on an amnesty. They've got to take on something popular.

LUDDEN: Immigration advocates warn that if the Obama administration does nothing before this fall's midterm elections, Hispanic voters will punish Democrats by staying home. That would make it even less likely that immigration will be passed in the next Congress.

What Roy also said was that the reason he wasn't worried about an amnesty passing is that NumbersUSA is confident it can mobilize Americans to make it clear to Congress that any amnesty vote would be extremely unpopular.

And I've been waiting since 1986 for enforcement.
