Man gets 10 years for immigrant death

MIAMI -- Prosecutors say a Loxahatchee man has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for his part in the death of a Cuban immigrant being smuggled into the U.S.

The U.S. Attorney's Office reports that 30 year-old Luis Perez was sentenced on Friday. He had previously confessed to investigators that he organized smuggling trips, including the November 2007 trip in which a man died. Authorities say 35 immigrants were brought from Cuba on board a 33-foot boat, operated by co-defendants Angel Arce Perez and Aurelio Sanchez Ortega.

One of the Cubans drowned as he tried to swim to shore on Palm Beach. The other 34 made it ashore.

We keep arguing that this is just one reason why they should get rid of the wetfoot dryfoot policy. There is way too much money being made from smuggling them in. Also they are coming here now more for economic reasons than poitical ones. It is no different than Mexicans, Haitians or Central Americans. They too cost us plenty. I don't know how many are aware of this but often times they have section 8 housing and foodstamps in place for their relatives before they even arrive yet the relatives have $8,000 to $10,000 to pay the smugglers.

Black Market Mexicans 10,000 US if they agree to cary duffle bags across the border.
