Ball proposes law fight illegal immigrant crime

Ball explains proposed legislation to
Pawling residents Saturday

Pawling -- Assemblyman Gregory Ball of Carmel is working on a bill in the Assembly that would allow state troopers to act as immigration officers while on duty.

States and local municipalities throughout the country are taking part in the program, the latest addition to the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigration Responsibility Act of 2006.

The law change would call for the performance of immigration officer functions by state officers and employees.

As stated on the Immigration and Customs Enforcement website, this addition “authorizes the secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to enter into agreements with state and local law enforcement agencies, permitting designated officers to perform immigration law enforcement functions, pursuant to a Memorandum of Agreement, provided that the local law enforcement officers receive appropriate training and function under the supervision of sworn U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers.â€
