A Mexican national shot and wounded by a sheriff's deputy on a Loma Linda Street this afternoon first led deputies on a short pursuit and tried to run a deputy over, authorities said.
Milan Isaac Castro, 36, of Sinoloa is listed in critical condition, Loma Linda firefighters said. He is expected to be charged with attempted murder of a peace officer.

A deputy tried to pull Castro over at 2:04 p.m. at the intersection of Park Avenue and Coloma Street but the man refused to stop his gray Toyota pickup truck. Instead, he drove for less than a minute before pulling down the 25500 block of State Street, which is a cul de sac.

The deputy used a pit manuever to stop the Toyota, which spun in a circle and came to a stop, said sheriff's spokeswoman Cindy Beavers. The deputy then got out of his patrol car and ordered Castro to do the same.

"The suspect then accelerated directly toward the deputy," Beavers said. "That's when the deputy fired at the suspect, struck him and the truck came to a stop on the curb," she said. The right left tire of a gray Toyota pickup rested on a curb facing west and a patrol car with its overhead lights still on and door flung open faced the opposite direction. Investigators walked the scene this afternoon, inspecting the position of the vehicles and speaking with a handful of neighbors who were home at the time of the shooting.
