LA JOYA - Police say a trio of drug smugglers may have thought that freezing conditions would give them and edge, but their plan backfired.

At 6 a.m. While many of the roadways were still covered with ice La Joya police pulled over a suspect with three large bundles of pot in his car.

They also stopped a truck with two suspects who were alleged escorts for the vehicle carrying the drugs.

Officers say there were really no other drivers on the road because of the freezing cold. The suspects stood out like a sore thumb.

"I guess these people they think the police officers are going to be somewhere drinking a cup of coffee or hot chocolate across the street but the police departments are out here working 24 hours a day and this is the result, " said Joe Cantu, La Joya Police.

Authorities confiscated an estimated 250 pounds of marijuana wrapped in three large bundles.

All three suspects were born in Mexico They are all and charged with possession of marijuana, which is a second degree felony. Their bond is set at $100,000 each.

Their chance opportunity for smuggling in freezing weather turned out to be no opportunity at all.

"If they think that there's no police officers here and they have the opportunity to get by, they will take that chance," said Cantu.
