Bilbray, Opposing Immigration Reform, Calls Amnesty 'Immoral'

May 09, 2007

San Diego Congressman Brian Bilbray is opposing immigration reform being introduced in the Senate. From Capitol Hill, Jodi Breisler reports.

The Senate Democrats' legislation includes not only tougher checks on employers, but also a guest worker program and pathway to citizenship. Republican Bilbray says this equates to unacceptable amnesty.

Bilbray: No matter how much you want to candy-coat it, amnesty is not only wrong from the common sense point of view -- it's immoral.

Bilbray says Congress shouldn't repeat the mistakes of the 1986 amnesty. He is part of a group of anti-immigration Republicans who say they'll stop any Senate legislation from going ahead in the House. Senators are still negotiating over a bill they hope to introduce on Monday.
