SIERRA VISTA — Gunshots were reported Tuesday night near the U.S.-Mexico border-area residence of Glenn Spencer, founder of the American Border Patrol, a private border watch group.

Sheriff’s deputies responded about 7 p.m. to 11615 S. Apache Road in Hereford after Spencer reported the incident, Cochise County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Carol Capas said.

Spencer reported three shots fired from the area southwest of his property — from the direction of the border, Capas said.

He told authorities the second shot traveled over his head.

Deputies responded, and, after initial investigation, it appeared the shots came from nearby target practice taking place on the U.S. side of the border, Capas said.

One of Spencer’s neighbors reported shots fired at about the same time, saying that they spooked her horses.

But she reported the shots had not come from a southerly direction, Capas said.

The report comes about a week after a kidnapping and violence last Wednesday in Cananea, Sonora, Mexico, which led to a false alarm and lockdown in the Sonoran border town of Naco two days later.
