State police say they found more than 5 pounds of heroin stashed in the engine of a pickup they stopped on Interstate 40 near Kingman.

A state Department of Public Safety officer who stopped the truck for a traffic violation became suspicious of the driver and asked for permission to search the vehicle. Sergeant Rod Wigman says a drug-sniffing dog located 51/2 pounds of the drug hidden in the engine manifold.

The 36-year-old driver of the truck was arrested. He was identified as Madian Santos, who told officers he was an illegal immigrant living in North Carolina.

He told officers he was coming from Bakersfield, California and headed to North Carolina.
