Bill Would Deny Workers' Compensation for Illegals
(Charleston) Under a proposed bill in the Statehouse, thousands of undocumented workers in the Palmetto State could be denied workers' compensation coverage. That includes lost wages and medical bills stemming from work-related injuries.
The bill was introduced earlier this year by two Upstate lawmakers and stalled in committee.
Supporters argue illegal immigrants often commit fraud to obtain jobs and that should make them ineligible to collect benefits.
Opponents say the proposed bill is anti-Hispanic. Some argue it would encourage employers to hire more illegal immigrants and give them dangerous jobs, knowing they won't have to pick up the tab if a worker is hurt.
