Illegal aliens won't stay or come to Warren County if they can't find work. That's the premise behind the "Doing it Right" business seminar next week.

Mason Mayor Char Pelfrey, working with Citizens for Legal Communities, Deerfield Twp., the Northeast Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce and Warren County police and prosecutors, came up with forum idea.

"We were looking for ways that we can speak to this issue, and the way we have authority to speak is through our local businesses," Pelfrey said. "I am convinced, with as much frustration as we have as a nation with our state and federal elected officials right now, the way to combat it is by educating local businesses. Illegal aliens will not stay where they can't work."

The forum next week will include a panel of experts on the immigration issue, including representatives of the state attorney general's office, local law enforcement, the U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement Office, as well as two local employers, Natorp's and Tri-Health.

The panelists will give an overview and then answer submitted questions.

Chamber President John Harris said interest in this topic hasn't been necessarily huge, but blips of curiosity have popped up at times, such as when the Citizen's for Legal Communities was formed in the wake of the murder of Mason resident Kevin Barnhill allegedly at the hands of illegal immigrants, one of whom is still wanted.

It peaked again when Deerfield Twp. passed legislation that requires township vendors to attest to the fact they don't employ illegals.

"We wanted to help businesses learn how to identify the people; we wanted to tell them the ramifications and teach them how they can safeguard their businesses," he said. "Natorp's is a good example of how they get their workers and everyone is accounted for."

Bill Barnhill, co-founder of the Citizens for Legal Communities, said now that the federal government appears to be taking steps to ensure businesses are following reporting and other regulations, it is crucial for the local business community to understand their obligations.
