Delano man arrested on suspicion of raping woman in Salinas ag field
    April 27, 2009

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office said they arrested a 27-year-old man Sunday on suspicion of raping and sodomizing a woman in an agriculture field on Highway 183 at Cooper Road, outside of Salinas city limits.

Jose Mejia of Delano was taken into custody after the woman made the report to law enforcement officers about 6:15 a.m.

Deputies said Mejia offered the woman a ride to her home in his 1990 Ford Thunderbird. They said Mejia instead drove her to the middle of an agriculture field, where he subsequently raped and sodomized her. Deputies said Mejia left her stranded in the field after the incident occurred. They said she flagged down a passing motorist, who took her to Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital.

Mejia was later located and positively identified as the suspect, deputies said.

Mejia is being held at county jail on suspicion of forcible rape, sodomy, penetration with a foreign object and an immigration hold.
