GASTONIA — The community college entrance exam should consist of a single question, two state lawmakers say: Are you a legal American resident?
Answer yes, and you can attend any two-year school in North Carolina. Fill in the circle marked no, and you’ve flunked.
State Reps. Wil Neumann and Pearl Burris-Floyd plan to introduce a bill in the General Assembly that would block the enrollment of illegal immigrants in community colleges. They announced the move at a Tuesday news conference outside the Gaston County Courthouse.

Lawmakers to fight decision allowing illegal immigrants in colleges
12:51 PM EDT on Tuesday, September 29, 2009
By RICHARD DEVAYNE / NewsChannel 36
GASTONIA, N.C. -- Two state representatives announced plans today to fight a recent ruling to allow illegal immigrants into state community colleges.
"What part of illegal don't you understand?" said Rep. Wil Neumann as he spoke in front of the Gaston County Courthouse Tuesday morning.
He said he has received a number of calls and e-mails about the state community college system's decision to allow illegal immigrants the chance to enroll in any of the 58 state community colleges as long as the student graduated from a high school in the United States. The students would have to pay out-of-state tuition.
The new admission policy would take effect if the legislature doesn't act before the end of its next session, Neumann said.
But Neumann said it would only be a matter of time before the board changed the rules to allow the students, here illegally, the chance to get in-state tuition.
"I plan to introduce legislation to override the new rule on the first day of the next session," said Neumann.
Neumann represents District 108 in Gaston County. He was joined by Rep. Pearl Burris Floyd who represents District 110 in Gaston and Cleveland counties.
