DETROIT (AP) — A former U.S. border inspector is going to prison for two years for smuggling illegal aliens into this country from Canada.

Forty-nine-year-old Adam Bender, of Eastpointe, was one of three men charged with alien smuggling. Thirty-five-year-old Hassan Saad, of Detroit, and Hani Bazzi, of Windsor, Ontario, pleaded guilty earlier.

Authorities said Bender allowed illegal aliens, accompanied by Saad, to enter the United States through his border station.

U.S. Attorney Stephen Murphy said Bender chose to abdicate his duty at a time when national security demands more, rather than less, vigilance at the border.
