Hispanic American Coalition, You Don't Speak for Me!, Joins With House Leaders to Oppose Senate Amnesty Plan
Friday May 12, 2:12 pm ET
Group Urges a 'Reverse Migration' Enforcement Strategy

WASHINGTON, May 12 /PRNewswire/ -- You Don't Speak for Me!, a new national coalition of American Hispanics that supports immigration enforcement, is joining with leaders in the House of Representatives who have sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist opposing legislation that would grant amnesty to 12 million or more illegal aliens. Members of the You Don't Speak for Me! coalition will be renewing their call for swift Senate action on an enforcement only bill at a Capitol Hill news conference on Wednesday, May 17 with leading members of the House and Senate.
Reacting to news that Sen. Frist and Minority Leader Harry Reid have agreed to move forward with an amnesty bill, the chairman of the You Don't Speak for Me! coalition, retired Col. Al Rodriguez noted that, "When it comes to immigration policy, the United States Senate apparently doesn't speak for anyone, except the people who have broken our laws and cheap labor business interests. National polls -- especially those done after the May 1 illegal alien protests and boycott -- show that an overwhelming majority of Americans oppose the kind of amnesty being promoted by the Senate and the White House. That opposition includes millions of Americans who are of Hispanic heritage," Col. Rodriguez said.

The You Don't Speak for Me! coalition was formed in response to the recent street demonstrations by illegal aliens and their supporters all across the country, and to portrayals in the media that these protests and boycotts represent the views of mainstream American Hispanics. The group gained national and international attention with its own May 1 news conference that was covered live on C-SPAN.

"We are proud to join with leading members of Congress who are standing up for the interests of all Americans, and representing the interests of the overwhelming majority of hard-working, law-abiding citizens," Rodriguez said. "When these courageous members of Congress stand up and ask their colleagues in the Senate to do the right thing and enforce our immigration laws without rewarding millions of people who broke those laws, they will not be standing alone. As Americans and as people of Hispanic heritage, we will be standing with them."

You Don't Speak for Me! is calling on the Senate to follow the lead of the House and approve an immigration enforcement-only bill that strengthens border security, enforces laws against employers who unlawfully hire illegal aliens, and curtails non-essential benefits and services to those here illegally. "It is time for the Senate to honor its commitments to the American people, to protect our national security, and do what the overwhelming majority of Americans are demanding, instead of what the illegal aliens are demanding," Rodriguez stated.

The press conference featuring Col. Rodriguez and other leaders of You Don't Speak for Me! will take place Wednesday, May 17 at 2:30 pm on the terrace of the Cannon House Office Building(in case of rain, the news conference will take place in Room 122 of the Cannon Building).
