Border Patrol agents arrest 1,900 immigrants over the weekend in the RGV

This weekend alone, Border Patrol Agents made close to 1,900 arrests throughout the Rio Grande Valley.

"The smugglers don't care for the individuals they're crossing, all they care about is the money. They see these as a commodity, not as people," said Border Patrol Agent, Marcelino Medina.

On Friday, November 30, agents from the Weslaco Station found a group of 73 undocumented immigrants near Hidalgo.

One of those arrested was confirmed to be an MS-13 Gang Member, according to RGV Sector Chief Manuel Padilla, Jr.
On Saturday, December 1, Border Patrol Agents stopped 27 human smuggling attempts and intercepted 2,500 pounds of marijuana, according to Padilla.

On Monday morning, another large group of 51 immigrants were found near Granjeno.

"The majority of these individuals are from Central American countries, like El Salvador and Honduras, Guatemala."

Many of them, agents say, are in failing conditions.

"When these illegal aliens are partaking in this journey, they are not prepared. They are malnourished, they don't have very much water, very little food. They're not prepared," said Medina.
And the illegal activity is turning deadly.

"Just this weekend, Border Patrol Agents discovered two skeletal remains and then recovered one body in the Rio Grande," said Medina. "Plus, this (Monday) morning, Border Patrol Agents found the body of a deceased person in a canal in Mission. The cost of them coming to the United States should never be their life."

Agents throughout the RGV have arrested over 41,000 undocumented immigrants since October 1, 2018, according to Padilla.

They probably didn't know exactly when they would arrive, but watching all the kabuki show in DC, they did know they would arrive.

HOUSTON (AP) — While the Trump administration focuses attention on migrant caravans trying to cross the southern U.S. border in California, migration is surging at the opposite end of the border in South Texas.



Last weekend in South Texas' Rio Grande Valley, Border Patrol agents caught 1,900 people trying to cross the southern border illegally.

Border agents in the Rio Grande Valley are apprehending around 680 people a day, compared to up to 145 arrests in San Diego, across the border from Tijuana, Mexico, where an estimated 6,000 people are waiting to cross.


Raul Ortiz, the Border Patrol's acting chief for the Rio Grande Valley, says fewer than a dozen people have claimed to have been part of a migrant caravan.


Most are adults bringing children, or minors crossing the border alone.

EDINBURG — U.S. Border Patrol agents in the Rio Grande Valley made multiple arrests recently, seizing millions in narcotics, encountering stash houses and family groups and unaccompanied children attempting to enter the country through the Valley corridor.

On Saturday Dec. 1, Fort Brown agents apprehended a group of eight illegal immigrants near Isla Blanca Park on South Padre Island. While processing the group, agents identified one of the illegal immigrants had a prior arrest and conviction in St. Paul, Minnesota, for sexual exploitation of a minor — sexual performance.

Family units detained
On Friday Nov. 30 during the evening, Weslaco agents patrolling near Hidalgo encountered a large group of illegal immigrants comprised of family units and unaccompanied children.

According to reports, agents took custody of 73 people from the countries of Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador.
On the morning of Dec. 3, McAllen agents encountered a group of 51 illegal immigrants south of Granjeno, consisting of family units and unaccompanied children.

Human remains discovered
On Saturday Dec. 1 in the afternoon, the Falfurrias Border Patrol Station received a call from the Brooks County Sherriff’s Office regarding skeletal remains found on a local ranch.

BCSO took custody of the remains and transported them to the Webb County Medical Examiner’s Office.

And on Dec. 3, McAllen agents patrolling south of Mission located a body in the Rio Grande. After successfully recovering it, a local Justice of the Peace ordered the body transported to the county morgue.

Marijuana seizure
Border Patrol agents stopped several narcotic smuggling attempts resulting in the seizure of more than a ton of marijuana over the first weekend of December.
On Saturday Dec. 1, Rio Grande City agents while on patrol located an abandoned motorized scooter pulling a garden trailer loaded with 20 bundles of marijuana. The marijuana weighed 230 pounds, worth an estimated $183,000.
That afternoon, McAllen agents working near Mission observed a white pickup with bundles of marijuana in the bed. Mobile units responded and attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver failed to yield and a pursuit ensued. The chase came to an end after the driver returned to the river, abandoned the vehicle and swam back to Mexico empty handed. Inside the vehicle, agents seized more than 770 pounds of marijuana, worth an estimated $619,000.

Stash House
On Tuesday Nov. 27 in the evening, agents identified a stash house operating out of a residence in Donna. Inside the house, agents and deputies discovered 36 illegal immigrants from the countries of Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala.

The Rio Grande Valley Border Patrol Sector currently has multiple campaigns focused on rescues and danger awareness, such as “Operation Big Rig” and “No Se Arriesgue” — Do Not Risk It — to combat smuggling and ultimately save lives.
