REDWOOD CITY, Calif.—A former Redwood City man is facing the possibility of at least 20 years in prison after being charged with the 2008 beating of a 78-year-old woman.
Jose Perez-Gonzalez is being held without bail after pleading not guilty to attempted murder and other charges Thursday.

The 30-year-old Perez-Gonzalez was ordered to stand trial Jan. 19, a little more than two years after the woman was beaten with a crowbar in her home.

Investigators say Perez-Gonzalez attacked the woman during a burglary in her Daly City home. The attack left the woman blind and confined to a rest home.

Daly City police Lt. Jay Morena says Perez-Gonzalez fled to his native Mexico, where he was arrested by Mexican authorities in November 2008.

He was extradited to the U.S. earlier this year.
