Two suspected MS 13 gang members accused of fatally shooting a 14-year-old student on a Maryland public bus were arrested Thursday on a Metro bus in Houston.
Gilmar Leonardo Romero, 20, is charged with first degree murder in the Nov. 1 shooting death of Tai Lam at a Maryland bus stop.
Mario Ernesto Milan-Canales, 30, is charged as an accessory after the fact.
Milan-Canales was present at the time of the shooting and also allegedly attempted to destroy evidence, said Montgomery County (Maryland) Police Department Lt. Paul Starkes.
The men had been under surveillance by members of the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Violent Offenders and Fugitive Task Force who saw them board the bus and executed a traffic stop about 10 a.m.
They were arrested without incident.
One suspect was wearing the same Yankees baseball hat he wore in a photo provided to the task force by Maryland officials, authorities said.
Romero and Milan-Canales are both believed to be MS 13 gang members, police said.
The man believed to be the gunman in the incident, 20-year-old Hector Mauricio Hernandez, was arrested Nov. 7 in Maryland. He is also affiliated with the gang MS 13, Starkes said.
Tai, a high school freshman, was with a group of of 10 to 12 friends who had a verbal altercation with a group of four or five men who boarded a public bus in Silver Spring, Md., about 11 p.m. Nov. 1.
It is unknown what the argument was about, said Starkes.
"Certainly it was verbal and didn't rise to anything physical at that point."
However, as Hernandez exited the bus he turned and fired a handgun from the rear door of the bus into the back of the bus striking the three teens, according to a release issued by the Montgomery County (Maryland) Police Department.
Tai and two other teens, aged 14 and 15, were taken to hospitals. Tai died that night; the other two teens who were shot are home and are expected to make complete recoveries.
"At this time we have nothing that indicates that they are gang members," said Starkes of Tai and his friends.
Both Romero and Milan-Canales are being held without bail in the Harris County Jail, awaiting extradition to Maryland.
Starkes declined to comment on how investigators located the pair in Houston.

Two men sought in connection with the Nov. 1 slaying of a Silver Spring boy on a Ride On bus were apprehended Wednesday on a bus in Houston after fleeing the area, according to Montgomery County police.
Members of the U.S. Marshal's Fugitive Task Force apprehended Gilmar Leonardo Romero, 20, and Mario Ernesto Milan-Canales, 30, around 10 a.m. Wednesday as they were riding a public bus in Houston. County police learned that Romero and Milan-Canales had fled to Texas after arrest warrants were issued Nov. 10, according to a police news release.
Romero and Milan-Canales, whose local addresses are unknown, were allegedly involved in the Nov. 1 slaying of 14-year-old Tai Lam of the 1000 block of Quebec Terrace in Silver Spring, who was shot and killed on a Ride On bus on his way home from downtown Silver Spring with a group of friends. Romero and Milan-Canales are being detained in Houston and awaiting extradition from Texas to Montgomery County.
The warrant for Romero charges him with first-degree murder and the warrant for Milan-Canales charges him with accessory after the fact for first-degree murder. Hector Mauricio Hernandez, 20, of the 8600 block of Flower Ave. in Takoma Park, was arrested Nov. 7 and charged with first-degree murder. He was denied bail.
Although police believe Hernandez was the shooter, prosecutors in the Montgomery County State's Attorney's office believe Romero had a substantial involvement in Lam's death, said Lucille Baur, a county police spokeswoman, last week.
Police believe all three men are affiliated with the gang MS-13. Police also believe Hernandez is an illegal immigrant.
"We have the three people that were primarily involved in this incident and have the charges in place for them," Baur said Thursday. "We are continuing to investigate and there is the possibility that someone else can be charged."
Lam was riding home from downtown Silver Spring the night of the shooting with a group of 10 to 12 friends, when three to four men got on the bus at a Sligo Avenue stop in Silver Spring. Another man, who police say was Hernandez, got on the bus at another stop shortly after.
Lam Cao, Tai Lam's 16-year-old brother, said some of the men were taunting other passengers on the bus. Police say there was a verbal exchange between the men and the group of youths riding with Tai Lam and Lam Cao. As the men were getting off the bus at Piney Branch Road and Arliss Street, one of them, who police say was Hernandez, turned and fired several shots into the bus near the rear door, striking three teenagers who were together at the back of the bus.
The youths were taken to the hospital. Two survived, but Tai Lam was pronounced dead upon his arrival at Washington Adventist Hospital in Takoma Park, according to charging documents.

I heard about the shooting on the bus from my local news station. But they left out some of the facts. 1. THAT THE MURDERERS WERE ILLEGAL ALIENS, AND 2. THAT THEY WERE MS-13 GANG MEMBERS. I guess they didnt feel it was important for any of their viewers to have this information.

WHy aren't the bus companies asking for positive identification.....and is it any surprise that these illegal alien gang-bangers made a direct bee-line to Houston, one of the largest illegal alien criminal sanctuary cities in our nation? They probably thought they'd hide in plain sight for a few months then hop across the border.
Thank God they were caught, however, there are still about 30,000 more MS-13 members in the U.S. Deportation....si se puede!
