More than $100,000 in cash, phony checks seized at San Ysidro border

The initial seizure of the CBP's three-day weekend reported period occurred around 9 a.m. on Friday morning at the San Ysidro port of entry. CBP officers pulled aside a 24-year-old man as he attempted to walk into Mexico. A search turned up bundles of undeclared cash in his pants pockets and a duffel bag totaling $29,042, the CBP said.

The San Jose resident was arrested and taken to the Metropolitan Correctional Center.

Around noon, two females, 16 and 21, and an 18-year-old man, all U.S. citizens traveling together, sought to walk into Mexico. An inspection of the trio turned up $13,600 in undeclared cash in the man’s pants pocket and the females' purses.

The cash was seized.

Saturday night at 9:30 p.m. officers keeping an eye on southbound operations along Interstate 5 south stopped a bus. An inspection of the passengers turned up $14,000 in undeclared cash in the possession of a Mexican man, 35.

They seized the cash.

Sunday at 1:30 p.m., a 46-year-old man attempting to walk into Mexico. The CBP inspection turned up a number of IDs with different names but bearing the man's photograph. They also found $73,700 worth of counterfeit cashier’s checks issued to several people.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested the man, a citizen of the Dominican Republic, on suspicion of identity and benefits fraud. CBP seized the cashier’s checks.

CBP officers also recovered a stolen laptop and two stolen vehicles over the weekend.
