Women's Underwear Found In Suspect's Beaverton Apartment, Police Say

BEAVERTON, Ore. -- The discovery of women's underwear in the apartment of a rape suspect has led detectives to believe he may have more victims, Beaverton police said Tuesday.

Silvestre Cervantes-Avila, 21, is accused of taking a 19-year-old woman to his Beaverton apartment and raping her at gunpoint at about 4:30 a.m. on Nov. 10.

According to the Beaverton Police Department, Cervantes-Avila gave his victim the name "Martin" and used a black semi-automatic gun with white handles to threaten her while he allegedly raped and sodomized her.

Police said Cervantes-Avila then let his victim go but kept her underwear.

Cervantes-Avila was arrested Nov. 10 and booked into jail on charges of rape, sodomy, kidnapping, coercion, strangulation, unlawful use of a weapon and unlawful delivery of cocaine.

Neighbors said they didn't know Cervantes but were stunned by the charges he's facing.

"We live in a really good neighborhood from what I've seen. So it's really unfortunate this stuff has to happen," neighbor Kim Collard said.

Beaverton detectives said they searched his apartment and found large amounts of drugs and the gun allegedly used in the rape. Police said they also found more pairs of women's underwear, leading investigators to believe there may be more sexual assault victims.

Neighbors said they can only hope that other potential victims will come forward to keep the suspected rapist locked up.

"If they are victims, they should speak up. Because if nobody speaks up then he'll just go free and do it again," neighbor Norma Aguilar said.
