'OTMs' - the overlooked immigrants

With the recent passage of Arizona's immigration law, the immigration debate is back at center stage.

Much of the time, the argument concerning border control centers on illegal immigrants who come to the U.S. from Mexico seeking a better life. But what is often overlooked are those seeking entrance into the U.S. from other countries. They are called OTMs -- border lingo for "other than Mexican." Border Patrol agents report that OTMs have grown to make up some 42 percent of those illegally attempting to cross into the U.S. from Mexico.

A recent report on Atlanta's WSB-TV obtained records from a federal detention center near Phoenix, Arizona, revealing listings of illegal aliens from countries that support terrorism supporting.

Bob Beauprez, former Colorado Republican congressman, thinks the Obama administration was all too willing to attack the new Arizona state law before ever reading its content. He also feels they have paid little attention to this growing concern.

"A lot of these guys who are apprehended are actually coming from nations known to sponsor and harbor terrorism." He explains that they are coming from "over a dozen different nations, [including] places like Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, Sudan, [and] Yemen -- some of the worst of the worst."

The station's report also shows that the Taliban and Hezbollah not only use the violent Mexican drug cartels to traffic drugs, but they also use southern narcotics routs to smuggle al-Qaida-linked terrorists into the United States.

A 2006 congressional report claims that only 10 to 30 percent of illegal aliens are ever caught -- implying that 70 to 90 percent enter the U.S. unnoticed.
