COCHISE COUNTY, AZ (KOLD) - After the $1.5 million funding was approved by the state, Sheriff Larry Dever detailed the newly formed Border Interdiction Unit to the Cochise County Board of Supervisors on August 11, according to a press release.

On August 13, the Border Interdiction Unit was working along the border when they were able to successfully stop aircrafts from attempting to enter the U.S. from Mexico. The Deputies' presence in the area, stopped one aircraft from taking off and the second one "hard landed" while still in Mexico.

The unit is designed to maximize the law enforcement efforts of the Sheriff's Office in Cochise County and on the U.S.-Mexico border.

The mission of the Border Interdiction Unit is to disrupt criminal activity in the border areas that badly effects Cochise County residents. Also, the unit will investigate crimes in Cochise County that are associated with illegal immigrants.

The six members of the Border Interdiction Unit were selected from current personnel from all patrol districts within the Sheriff's Office with a tour assignment to last eighteen months.

Operation plans were approved so the unit will be able to work known smuggling routes along the Cochise County-Mexico border, as well as areas recently impacted by criminal activity.
