DALLAS - Police are searching for a man who abandoned three of his children after getting into a wreck, which ejected one of the children from the car onto the street.

At about 11 p.m. Thursday, 34-year-old Miguel Torres Sr. apparently lost control of his Ford Expedition and crashed into a pole, sending the SUV into a spin in the 4400 block of Lawnview Avenue in Dallas. His 5-year-old daughter, who was one of four children inside the vehicle, was ejected from the SUV and landed in the middle of the road in her car seat.

Police said Torres left the child in the street and drove about one mile to a park, where he parked and left his 6-year-old and 9-year-old sons inside the SUV. Torres then fled on foot, taking his 11-month-old girl, Emma, and later dropping her off at his mother-in-law's home, where he was picked up by an unknown person.

"He just gave her the baby and she was full of blood," said Olgalivia Salazar, the children's aunt. "She didn't know what happened and thought the worst."

Family members said Torres had been deported and told to stay out of the country, but came back. Torres also has a criminal background that includes burglary and drug possession.

Nine-year-old boy Miguel Jr., who was not injured, was able to flag down help for his brother Thomas, who suffered a serious gash to the head during the wreck.

"They said [Miguel Jr.] was screaming for his dad and his dad just kept going," Salazar said.

Neighbors who heard the crash said they were shocked to find the 5-year-old girl, Mia, in the middle of the road.

"She just kept crying and crying," said Kayla Rose, who lives near the site where the young girl was ejected. "And then, she tried to get up and walk and we wouldn't let her walk."

The injured children were taken to Children's Medical Center in Dallas. A family member said Thomas is in critical condition and suffered severe head trauma. He had a three-hour surgery on Friday.

"He had a fracture to his skull all the way down, broke his nose and now they found out he had a glass shoved in his eye and they don't know if he's going to be permanently blind from that eye," Salazar said.

His sister Mia is also in the intensive care unit and suffered serious injuries.

Miguel Jr. told authorities his father was drinking heavily that night, police said.

Authorities said they plan on charging the man with two cases of injury to a child and one case of abandonment.

Dad Allegedly Abandoned Injured Kids after Crash

DALLAS - A Dallas father abandoned his three children after crashing the family sport utility vehicle late Thursday and fleeing the scene, Dallas police said.

The incident happened at about 10:45 p.m. in the Pleasant Grove area of the city. According to investigators, Dallas-Fire Rescue responded to 4400 Lawnview Ave., where they found a 5-year-old girl in the roadway and being tended to by neighbors.

At the same time, fire-rescue was also called to Parkdale Park at Lawnview Avenue and Military Parkway, where they discovered the wrecked SUV and two boys, ages 6 and 9. The older child was unharmed but the younger boy suffered major head lacerations.

Both the 6-year-old boy and 5-year-old girl were transported to Children's Medical Center and were listed in critical condition on Friday morning. The 9-year-old was also transported for observation.

Investigators said Miguel Torres had been driving south on Lawnview when his SUV sideswiped a utility pole, ejecting the girl. The man did not stop the vehicle, police said.

Neighbor Tina Medina, who comforted the girl while paramedics arrived, said the child was crying and terrified.

"She was alone and just imagine being 5 years old and being in the middle of the street with strangers," Medina said. "She said her dad left her."

The father drove to the park and abandoned the vehicle and the two boys, police said. He fled on foot, taking his 1-year-old daughter with him, they said.

Torres then went to the nearby home of his mother or mother-in-law, dropped off the girl and fled with a friend, police said.

According to police, the 9-year-old boy told officers that his father had been drinking heavily before he got behind the wheel.

Police have filed two charges of Injury to a Child and one charge of Child Abandonment against Torres. He is also wanted on outstanding warrants for burglary of a car, possession of marijuana and theft.

    He remains at large.

After the crash, officials spoke with the 9-year-old boy, who told them his father had been drinking heavily before the accident.

Authorities say as the SUV spun out of control the force caused the 5-year-old girl, who was seated in a safety seat but not seat belted, to be ejected through the rear window. Neighbors heard a loud crash and rushed outside to see what happened. They found something bloody in the street and initially thought it was a dog or animal. As the witnesses moved closer, they realized it was a child.

Dallas police are looking for a man who allegedly abandoned his four children moments after a car crash late Thursday night.

The man's 5-year-old daughter was ejected through a window after he hit a light pole in the 4400 block of Lawnview.

Police said he left the girl in the middle of the street and drove nearly one mile to a park, where he abandoned his sport utility vehicle, his 9-year-old son and severely injured 6-year-old son still inside.

"And to leave and not even render aid to the little children you left behind -- it's almost unimaginable," Sgt. Warren Mitchell said.

The 5-year-old girl and 6-year-old boy are in intensive care at Children's Medical Center. with head trauma. The children sustained head trauma and had glass embedded in their skin and eyes.

Police said the man then walked to his mother-in-law's home, where he left his 11-month-old son. The infant has non-life-threatening injuries.

Kyla Rose and Stefani Clemons woke up and found the 5-year-old in the street.

"She wanted us to tell her mama that she loved her," Rose said.

Clemons said the child "just kept crying and crying."

"If you know you hurt your child and you can't stop and make sure your child is OK then you don't need no child," she said. "You don't need to be with them at all, period."

Police on Friday did not immediately release the name of the man, who will initially face two counts of injury to a child and one count of child abandonment.

The oldest child, who wasn't hurt, told police that his father had been "drinking heavily."

NBCDFW's Grant Stinchfield contributed to this report.

He grabbed the anchor baby and ran.

That's not a man. A man would not use a child as a shield nor leave children laying in pain and alone.

He's also a felon for reentry.

I really don't care if he was drinking, that's just an excuse.
