EL PASO -- Border Patrol agents stationed in Deming, New Mexico arrested an illegal immigrant with an extensive criminal background, agency officials said.

Officials say agents arrested Jose Federico Aguilar-Gaytan, 26, as he was trying to enter the country illegally, officials added. The arrest was made Friday shortly after 10 p.m. Friday night.

Aguilar-Gaytan was then taken to Columbus to be processed and his biographical and biometrical information returned with a "lengthy" criminal and immigration history, officials added.

According to a news release, amongst Aguilar-Gaytan's previous arrest are the following: criminal possession of a dangerous weapon; assault with intent to cause serious injury; and gang assault. The suspect's record also stated he was previously deported from the U.S.

He will know be handed over to the United States Marshall Service for detention and prosecution, officials said.

In 2008, the El Paso Border Patrol Sector arrested more than 30,000 undocumented immigrants. Officials said 20% of those arrested have an extended criminal history.
