'Illegal immigrant is held over death of missing Iowa student Mollie Tibbetts' | Daily Mail Online

    August 21, 2018

    Jennifer Smith

An illegal immigrant is being held over the death of missing Iowa student Mollie Tibbetts.

The suspect is being held on a federal immigration detainer, according to officials.

No other information has yet been given.

The 20-year-old's remains were found on Tuesday on a rural property in Poweshiek County close to the town of Guernsey, around 10 miles from Brooklyn, where Mollie vanished on July 18.

The FAA issued a no fly zone in the area which will last until Wednesday morning. It prevents news choppers from flying overhead.

Police are not releasing any information until 4pm local time but people working for Crime Stoppers to help find her say her family has been informed.

The student was staying alone overnight in her boyfriend's home the night she went missing and was last seen going for a jog in the neighborhood at around 8pm but what happened afterwards has remained a complete mystery for weeks.

Her boyfriend opened a Snapchat photograph from her at 10pm which appeared to suggest that she was indoors but it is not known what time Mollie sent it.

Mollie Tibbetts has been found dead a month after vanishing. The 20-year-old vanished on July 18

Authorities find body of missing Iowa student Mollie Tibbetts

Mollie's body was found on August 21, 10 miles from where she vanished in Brooklyn on July 18. There have been several points of interest in the location including five areas close to Brooklyn which investigators zeroed in on. Pig farmer Wayne Cheney also had his home and land searched but he was never arrested. He lives four miles from where Mollie's body was found.

Last week, the FBI said it believed she had been abducted by someone she knew.

They warned that the person was 'hiding in plain sight' and had even attended vigils held in her honor but no arrests were made.

A $400,000 fund for her safe return was established but it did not produce any leads either.

The hunt for the missing student lasted five weeks and drummed up hundreds of tips but it remains unclear how she died or what led to the discovery of her body

Now, it will be dedicated to finding the person responsible for her death.

Greg Willey of Crime Stoppers of Central Iowa said her family and investigators would dedicate their resources to catching her killer 'once they catch their breath'.

The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation refused to share details of the discovery on Tuesday when contacted by DailyMail.com.

Last week, the student's heartbroken family and boyfriend had a private meeting with Vice President Mike Pence and an award fund for information about the case reached hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Cheney was questioned several times and had his property searched after police found a red t-shirt that was similar to one owned by the student near his property.

However it was never established if the t-shirt did in fact belong to Mollie.

Mollie was staying alone in the home she shared with her boyfriend Jack Dalton (above) in Brooklyn when she vanished. He is not a suspect in her disappearance

Mollie Tibbetts appears in clip taken before she went missing

Mollie's boyfriend's older brother Blake Dalton (left with his fiancee) were not in town on the night she vanished either. The only person who has been visibly scrutinized by police is pig farmer Wayne Cheney (right) who was questioned more than once and had his property searched after police found a red t-shirt that was similar to one owned by the student near his land. Cheney took a polygraph test and has never been charged

What happened? It remains unclear who took Mollie or how she died. She is pictured before she vanished on July 18

Cheney maintained his innocence throughout media interviews and took a polygraph test to try to rule himself out. He was never charged.

In the past few days, Mollie's father Rob Tibbetts, who has been in Iowa since she disappeared, went to California for a 'break'.

Mollie's father Rob went back to California, where he lives, last week for what he called a much needed 'break' from the investigation

He said he had been urged by authorities to do so and that it was a 'half way' point in the investigation.
Rob was not in the state when his daughter disappeared.

Her boyfriend, Dalton Jack, was away for work when she disappeared as was his older brother Blake.

The youngsters lived together in a home in Brooklyn with Blake's fiancee who was also cleared.

As the hunt for her intensified, authorities set up a website that was dedicate to finding her.

It provided a map detailing five locations police considered to be significant. It is unclear if Mollie's body was found at any of those spots.

The website also offered a tips page which generated hundreds of clues about what may have happened to her.

It remains uncertain what led to the discovery of Mollie's body on Tuesday.

This is the house Mollie was staying in alone when she vanished. It remains unclear if she ever returned home from her evening jog on July 18

Man charged with killing Mollie Tibbetts is an undocumented immigrant, authorities say

    August 21, 2018

Missing college student Mollie Tibbetts found dead

Authorities have announced a first-degree murder charge against Christian Rivera, 24, in the death of Iowa college student Mollie Tibbets.

Rivera is an undocumented immigrant and led detectives to her body in rural Poweshiek County, according to Iowa investigators.

The charge was filed more than month after Tibbetts went out for a jog and disappeared — and days after investigators searching for the missing Iowa college student said they were focusing their efforts on five locations.

For 34 days, federal, state and local authorities had scoured Poweshiek County for Tibbetts, and sifted through electronic data from her Fitbit, cellphone and social media accounts for any clue about what happened to the woman who was last seen alive while going for an evening run. They’d also interviewed nearly 1,500 people.

Authorities, who had narrowed their search to a carwash, Tibbetts’s boyfriend’s home, a truck stop and two farms.

The University of Iowa student’s last known communication was a July 18 Snapchat message she sent to her boyfriend, Dalton Jack, for whom she was house sitting, according to the Register. Jack, who was out of town, looked at it but didn’t immediately reply.

His “good morning” text the next day received no answer, and Tibbetts didn’t pick up her phone when someone at the day-care center where she worked called to ask why she didn’t show up. Every call went straight to voice mail.

Assistant Director of DCI Field Operations Mitchell Mortvedt told NBC affiliate WHO-DT that Tibbetts’s family members and her boyfriend have been cleared of suspicion.

Her family and dozens of volunteers in the small town of Brooklyn, population nearly 1,500, have been combing ditches, cornfields and empty buildings for any sign of Tibbetts. CBS News affiliate KCCI reported that authorities have also searched pig farms in the area, and last week authorities announced they were narrowing the search.

“It’s frustrating. It’s powerless. We’re racking our brains, thinking what can we think of to tell the investigators,” Kim Calderwood, Tibbetts’s aunt, told the Des Moines Register. “It’s the worst thing — to want to fix something you can’t fix.”

    (Poweshiek County Emergency Management Agency)
Mollie’s brother, Jake Tibbetts, told the newspaper the family went “through stages of scared and sad. And now we’re anxious and confused.”

“Mollie has the biggest heart of anyone we ever knew,” he said. “She was never shy. . . . She had room in her heart for everyone.”

Tibbetts was born in San Francisco and moved to Brooklyn with her mother when she was in second grade. She won state speech competitions, was involved in theater and ran cross-country. She was studying psychology, as her mother did.

As people searched, those closest to Tibbetts asked everyone to hold on to hope — and keep sharing information about her.

“We remain in awe and indebted to the help, creativity, outreach and love that you have shown Mollie and all of us,” Sandi Tibbetts Murphy, a cousin, wrote on the wall of the Finding Mollie Tibbetts Facebook page. “Please keep sharing Mollie’s information so we can bring our girl safely home.”

Greg Willey, of Crime Stoppers of Central Iowa, told the AP that $400,000 raised for information leading to Tibbetts’ safe return will instead go to the person who helps police catch anyone responsible for her death.

“Once they catch their breath, this will turn into a weapon going the other direction to catch the person who did it,” he said.

    • Updated Aug 21, 2018 at 5:16pm

    Christian Bajina Rivera.

Christian Bajina Rivera has been arrested in the death of University of Iowa student Mollie Tibbetts. The 20-year-old from was found dead on August 21, more than a month after she went missing in a case that drew nationwide attention, according to reports.

The 24-year-old Rivera is being held on an immigration detainer and police said they confirmed with the Department of Homeland Security that he is an “illegal alien.” He has been charged with first-degree murder. Rivera is a resident of rural Poweshiek County, Iowa, and has been in the area for about four to seven years, police said at a press conference. He faces a penalty of up to life in prison without parole.

Investigators first approached Rivera on August 20 and police said he was cooperative and was willing to talk about what happened. According to police, surveillance video from Brooklyn residents helped them identify Rivera through a car spotted on a video that showed Tibbetts running before her disappearance.

Tibbetts was last seen the evening of July 18 when she went for a run in her hometown of Brooklyn, Iowa. She had been staying at her boyfriend’s brother’s house, where she was dog-sitting while her boyfriend, Dalton Jack, his brother and his brother’s fiancee were out of town, according to police and her family. She texted her mother that night and sent Jack a Snapchat message, but was not heard from again. When she didn’t show up for work at a day camp on July 19, she was reported missing. Local authorities from the Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office were soon joined in the search by the Iowa Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the FBI.

Brooklyn is a city of about 1,400 people in eastern Iowa, located midway between Des Moines and Cedar Rapids. The community rallied around the Tibbetts family as the search for Mollie stretched to over a month. Tibbetts spent part of her childhood in the Oakland, California, area, where her father still lives, and then moved to her mother’s native Iowa along with her two brothers. She graduated from Brooklyn-Guernsey-Malcom High School in 2017 and was about to enter her sophomore year at the University of Iowa, where she was studying psychology.

This report will be updated with more information about the suspect as it is made available. Here is what we know so far about Christian Rivera and the death of Mollie Tibbetts:

    2. He Told Police He Saw Tibbetts While Running & Approached Her

    Facebook
Mollie Tibbetts with her boyfriend, Dalton Jack.

Tibbetts had last been seen about 7:30 p.m. on July 18 by a neighbor while jogging in Brooklyn, according to police. She sent a Snapchat message to her boyfriend, Dalton Jack, which he opened about 10 p.m., but it was not clear when she sent it. “Just a selfie with a caption like any other normal snapchat, but the background looked like she was indoors,” he said. Jack was ruled out as a suspect early on in the investigation.

During the investigation, police used Tibbetts’ electronic devices, including her computer, phone and information taken from her FitBit fitness tracker in an effort to locate her.

Her cousin, Emily Heaston, said police searched the home where Tibbetts had been staying. “Everything is right where she left it. Wallet, laptop, everything else was all right where she last placed it,” Heaston told KWQC-TV.

    3. Tibbetts Family & Friends Called Her a ‘Fighter’ & Said It Was Unlike Her to Disapear

    Facebook
    Mollie Tibbetts.
Mollie Tibbetts’ aunt, Kim Calderwood, told the Des Moines Register that she remains hopeful because she knows her niece. “She’s strong and sassy and a fighter and stubborn and she is not a quitter,” Calderwood told the newspaper.

She added she is a “a “beautiful, positive girl.” Tibbetts graduated from Brooklyn, Guernsey, and Malcom High School in 2017, according to her Facebook page. Her aunt told the Register that Tibbetts was on the debate team, ran track and was involved in her local Catholic church, St. Bridget Church.

Calderwood told WOI-TV, “This is not like her at all. She’s a very responsible and conscientious young woman.”

Laura Calderwood told The Gazette her daughter loved life at school, “She’s very intelligent and she loved college and really enjoyed studying. She loves life and lives it to the fullest. She is very happy and social, she loved to sing and perform and she loves caring for the kids at the day care where she works.

Tibbetts’ mother, Laura Calderwood, lives in Iowa, while her father, Robert Tibbetts, lives in Oakland, California. A family member posted on Facebook that Mollie had recently returned home from a visit with her family in California. She has two brothers, Jake and Scott and is the middle child in her family.

“It’s exhausting, I don’t know where she is, I don’t know if she’s safe,” Tibbett’s mother Laura Calderwood told KGO-TV. Mollie spent some of her childhood living in the Bay Area, where her father still lives. Her father was in Iowa helping in the search, but returned home a day before his daughter’s body was found.

    4. Police Searched Several Areas Around Brooklyn, Including a Pig Farm Multiple Times & Narrowed Down to 5 Locations, Including a Car Wash, Commercial Strip & a Truck Stop

    Facebook
    Mollie Tibbetts.
During the month that Tibbetts was missing, police followed several leads and searched many location around Brooklyn. The rural area made the search more difficult, authorities said.

Powieshiek County Sheriff Kriegel told ABC News, “We’re surrounded by farm ground: corn and soybeans. Right now the corn is probably eight, nine feet tall. The only way you can search it is basically walk down every other row. It’s difficult. Even the planes flying over have a difficulty looking down in the corn rows.”

Police searched a pig farm in Guernsey, Iowa, multiple times and interviewed a man who was connected to the farm. The man took a polygraph test as part of the investigation, but was eventually cleared.

In the days before Tibbetts’ body was found, police had narrowed the search to five locations in the Brooklyn area, including a car wash, a commercial strip and a truck stop, according to Fox News. It is not clear why police focused on those areas

    5. A $400,000 Reward Was Raised to Help Find Tibbetts & Police Received Many Tips During Their Investigation

    Facebook
    Mollie Tibbetts.
More than $400,000 in reward money was raised for information leading to Mollie Tibbetts being found as the case captured the hearts and minds of people all across the country. Greg Willey, the vice president of Crime Stoppers of Central Iowa, told The Associated Press the money would be used to catch and convict a suspect or suspects in Tibbetts’ death. It is not clear if any of the reward money has been claimed as a result of the discovery of Tibbetts’ body and the arrest of a suspect.

Police were inundated with tips throughout the investigation and set up a website, findingmollie.iowa.gov, because of the extensive interest in the case.

Her disappearance rattled the small town of Brooklyn.

“We’re a close-knit community and I couldn’t even imagine this happening to one of my kids. We love Mollie. They’re family and we look after each other,” Carla Kriegel told the Globe Gazette.

“A daughter to anybody in this community is a daughter to everybody. We all hope the same effort would be made toward our own children,” town resident Joy Vanlandschoot, who has helped with the efforts, told the Des Moines Register.

GUERNSEY, Ia. — An undocumented immigrant is in custody charged with first-degree murder in the Mollie Tibbetts investigation, authorities said.
Cristhian Bahena Rivera, 24, has been in the area for four to six years, officials said. Charges were filed in Poweshiek County court.
Tibbetts was reported missing on July 19, according to a criminal complaint. Shortly after her disappearance, investigators collected footage from the east side of Brooklyn from the evening of July 18.
The video showed Tibbetts running around Boundary and Middle Streets outside of Brooklyn when a black Chevy Malibu approached her around 7:45 p.m. on July 18.
Footage shows the vehicle, driven by Rivera, going back and forth in the area, according to the criminal complaint.
Officials pulled him in for questioning on Monday where he admitted to "making contact with a female running in Brooklyn" and that he pursued her to an area east of town in Poweshiek County, according to the criminal complaint.
Rivera told officials he exited his vehicles and started "running behind her and alongside her," according to the criminal complaint. Tibbetts then grabbed her phone and told him she was going to call the police, according to the criminal complaint.
He then told officials that he "got mad" and panicked and blocked his memory, which is what happens when "he gets very upset," according to the criminal complaint. Rivera told investigators he doesn't remember anything after that until he arrived at an intersection.
Rivera then told officials that he made a U-Turn, drove to an entrance of a field, pulled into a driveway and rode up to a cornfield, according to the complaint.
He then realized her had earpieces in his lap, which made him realize that Tibbetts was in the trunk, according to the criminal complaint.
Rivera told officials he pulled Tibbetts out of the trunk and found blood on the side of her head, according to the complaint. He then dragged Tibbetts on foot from his vehicle to a secluded location in the cornfield, according to the complaint.
He told officials he then put her over his shoulder and took her 20 meters into the cornfield where he covered her with some cornstalks and left her face up.
Rivera was able to use his cell phone to determine the route he traveled from Brooklyn, according to the complaint. He later guided investigators to Tibbetts location by memory and law enforcement found a deceased female body, according to the complaint.
The physical description matched what Rivera shared with officials and the clothing matched what Tibbetts was reportedly wearing, according to the complaint.
