Incursions by Mexican Military Not So Uncommon

DONNA - The Mexican government says soldiers’ crossing onto the U.S. side of at the Donna International Bridge was accidental.

The Mexican soldiers claim the bridge's design allowed them to pull a U-turn only in U.S. territory. CHANNEL 5 NEWS called Donna’s bridge director to find out if that was true, but he never called back.

Thirty-three Mexican soldiers and a specially-trained dog aboard four Humvees were temporarily held by customs officers before being allowed back into Mexico.

Congressman Henry Cuellar says he spoke to Mexican officials Wednesday. Cuellar confirmed what our sources told us. The men were on patrol on the Donna-Rio Bravo International Bridge when they crossed into the United States. The Mexican government claims there simply wasn't enough room on the bridge to turn around. The soldiers had to cross the boundary to do that.

"The Mexican authorities are saying to me that it's inexcusable and that it's not going to happen again. Quite honestly, I think they're just a little bit embarrassed by the whole situation,â€
