AG, ACLU disagree on tuition for children of illegal aliens
AG, ACLU disagree on tuition for children of illegal aliens
Associated Press - March 26, 2008 11:55 AM ET
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia's attorney general and the ACLU are at odds over in-state tuition for children of illegal immigrants.
The American Civil Liberties Union has written a letter to state colleges disputing the attorney general's interpretation of state law. The attorney general says dependents generally can be classified as in-state only if their parents are legal Virginia residents. However, dependents of illegal immigrants can get in-state tuition if they prove they have established Virginia residency.
The ACLU says children can't be penalized for their parents' actions. The organization says it will represent any child of undocumented residents in Virginia who is denied in-state tuition.
