    Aliens Key to US Agro-Industry

WARNING: Prensa Latina Newspaper biased article:

    Aliens Key to US Agro-Industry
    http://www.plenglish.com/article.asp?ID ... 7950DA0%7D)&language=EN

Washington, Aug 23 (Prensa Latina) The failure of migratory reforms in the United States has paved the way for the administration of President George W. Bush to increase repression of illegal aliens, say experts.

Agro-industrial sectors warn that if these roundups and deportations of illegal immigrant workers continue, there will be an agricultural catastrophe in the coming months.

In spite of their contribution to the US economy, these workers are now persecuted like criminals by agents of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement office (ICE)..

Ralph Pistoresi, member of wine and cattle farmers in California said that the majority of field workers are illegals.

Fear in the sector spread when the ICE announced recently that it was beginning a search campaign to deport farm laborers with false identity documents.

Tom Nassif, president of the Western Agro Industrial Association said this persecution of illegal workers has reduced manual labor by half.

In his opinion the coming crisis will have an impact on fertilization, refrigeration, transportation and insurance companies as well as chemical and pesticide companies.

That association has more than three thousand companies producing an estimated 50 billion dollars yearly, in California and Arizona alone.

These two states together with Oregon and Washington are the most affected by the lack of manual labor coming, mostly, from Mexico and Central America.

Here in Oregon, the regional group representing plant/farm nurseries is beginning to raise a stink about not having enough slaves for their growers.

News Release from: Oregon Assn. of Nurseries
NURSERY ASSOCIATION RESPONDS TO DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY ANNOUNCEMENT OF GREATER IMMIGRATION ENFORCEMENT MEASURES
    Posted: August 10th, 2007 5:31 PM

Wilsonville - Oregon Association of Nurseries Director of Government Relations Jeff Stone responded sharply to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announcement of a series of reforms the Bush Administration made addressing worksite enforcement provisions.

"This new regulation may mean the loss of an element critical to the industry's success," said Stone. "The rule is more likely to force domestic farm production overseas, than in sending illegal immigrants back home."

The nursery and greenhouse industry is Oregon's largest sector of agriculture with annual sales of more than $875 million annually. With a labor force of 21,000 Oregonians, access to a skilled agricultural workforce is a critical part of the industry's success.

Stone also raised concern about the socially divisive nature of the rule, "This will foment greater fear of our workforce-one that has been a part of our industry as long as this country has had an agriculture industry" he said.

"This is just another example of why Congress must pass a comprehensive immigration reform bill."

That sounds like a threat to me. Are they planning on doing something malicious because they aren't being coddled by businesses operating illegally like they have become accoustomed? Just goes to show more of the mentality of the invaders that are doing jobs Americans have been cheated out of...oops I mean won't do.

Let Agro-industry mechanize like the rest of most modern countries have.

They should have done so years ago.

I would rather pay a dollar more for a head of lettuce than what these illegals are soaking us for.

Then there is the prison labor that will be more than willing to earn a few bucks if you can't find anyone else to fill the jobs. (which I doubt, if you pay a decent wage.)
