Sessions fears for Mexican border fence's fate

    http://www.al.com/news/birminghamnews/i ... .xml&coll=

WASHINGTON - Plans to erect a 700-mile fence along the border with Mexico may be in jeopardy as the new Democratic majority in Congress considers immigration reforms that could eliminate funding for the project.

Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., was an early advocate for the fence, which was approved by Congress and President Bush. Sessions on Thursday said he was anticipating a challenge.

"I am worried about it. There could be attempts to undermine what we voted for," Sessions said.

Under the Republican majority, Congress approved the fence and partial funding for its construction as an attempt to cut down on illegal immigration. But Democratic leaders, who took office Thursday, have taken a dim view of the massive border barrier, especially since cost estimates have increased in recent weeks.

In a resolution on immigration that Senate Democrats plan to consider soon, they note that 12 million illegal immigrants already live in the United States, and they say a fence "will do nothing to address this situation," according to the office of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada.

HUH? What about the fact that a fence will keep out other illegals plus drug smugglers and terrorists?
We are NOT a nation of immigrants!

It will never be funded. If congress wanted to fund it they would have funded it in the last session. Even if by some miracle if they do fund it they authorized local towns and communities to divert the funding for a virtual fence. The fence is not going to go up. Congress never intended it to go up. And the project was orginally authorized only because it was an election year.

This congress, and this president have betrayed this country more than any other in our history.

Don't you get tired of Congress passing laws and then don't follow through or enforce them?
People are not as apathetic and asleep as they were and as soon as Congress realizes that maybe they'll start doing their jobs. Man, they are frustrating beyond belief.

I believe you're partially correct in that statement. Most of the Democrats that voted on the fence only did so out of political pressure. The didn't really want the fence when it was voted on and they don't want it now. With that said, there are still many Republicans in the U.S. Congress that want the fence and feel it's vital piece of the border security puzzle.

Personally, I don't think we're supporting our "friends" when we condemn the whole U.S. Congress for the acts of some Republicans, most Democrates, and the President of the United States.

I know it's hard for some to believe, but we do have a lot of support in the U.S. Congress. Will it be enough, maybe not, but I don't want to risk losing a "friend" by lumping them in with our enemies.

People like Reid have been speaking out both sides of their mouths for so long that they no longer make any sense whatsoever.
