Contractors group reports heavy absenteeism at job sites

The recent fears and rumors of sweeps by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has nearly shut down production on many South Florida construction projects, according to the South Florida Chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America.

Len Mills, executive vice president of the AGC of South Florida, indicated that companies are reporting that as many as 75 percent of their immigrant workforce are absent from projects in Dade and Broward counties.

Although he would not identify the particular sites, Mills gave examples of absenteeism at several Miami-Dade job sites. At one, he said, there were 450 workers on the job before Tuesday and yesterdayjust 112; at another site there were 114 and now there is no one. He said the problem is widespread in Broward also.

''The impact that these reported actions by the Federal government is having a devastating effect on the construction industry which is so vital to the overall economy of South Florida,'' Mills said in a statement.

In a meeting of the AGC board of directors last night held in part to discuss this matter, companies reported that it appears that many of the workers that are staying away from construction job sites are in fact legal immigrants that are choosing to stay home because they are scared their paperwork could be construed as incomplete, he said.

It seems every time there is a natural disaster, illegals flood the areas. Florida has had quite a few hurricanes in recent years, especially South Florida.

Now do like they used to do in the good old days, call the unemployment offices and hire a crew of good, hard working, tax paying, decent American men and woman for the job !

    Construction Workers Florida

4/28/06 We live in North Broward County.(Margate)
We saw this happen on the news this week. I do not think they are Citizens, other wise they wouldn't have run off the jobs.
Anyway my son has been trying to get a Construction Job, he was born here in Florida, he's a United States Citizen, ya think they would hire him?

All the companies in Florida should be investigated, and it should be against the Law in this Country to advertise for someone that speaks Bi-Lingual. I have been looking for employment since March 29,2006, I found a position finally, I am a Executive Adminstrator, do you know how many jobs I could not apply for because I don't speak Spanish. I bet if a company advertised for a English speaking person they would be sued. Have you noticed in your city offices and Court Houses how many Bi-Lingual people hold jobs, and if your an American you can't get hired. If oyu look at the upper management at all of the places I mentioned you will also see Bi-Lingual and thats who hires you, so if your an American you won't get a job in the city you live in or at any of the Courthouses. This Country will become a Third World if the American people don't do something about all of this, I won't see it but my grandchildrens children will see it. ALl I can say is what a shame, and why, because I feel our great Government have no idea what it's like, they are all in there own world, they don't have to compete from Employment.
One more thing is, if you are not born in this Country (United States of America) you should not be able to hold any Government Job, you shold be able to be a Politician in this Country if you weren't born here. Do you think we could go to another Country and run for office. I doubt it very much. Anyway just wanted to let it all out.
    Thanks

If I was in construction I think this would be a good time to invest in an all-american crew. Maybe they will see this as an opportunity to be ahead of the competition.

They sure are brazen about announcing how many illegal workers they have. Oh, that's right! One of the Bushio brothers is governor of Florida - there's no worry about the LAW being enforced or lawbreaking businesses being sanctioned.

How about arresting these crooks. I.C.E. clearly has all the evidence they need.
