Conference to Highlight Population Increase, Impact of Hispanics

    BY ERIC K. WARD

A state agency aims to raise public awareness of the growing Hispanic and Latino population in South Carolina by holding an upcoming conference in Columbia.

In the backdrop lurks a contentious national debate about immigration.

Signs of the increasing demographic group in South Carolina dot the state’s landscape, including locally.

In just one example, WNXG Channel 67 of Columbia recently began broadcasting the Mexico-based, Spanish-language Telemundo network 24/7. “We just saw a need in the community,â€

    Speaking of impact of Hispanics:
The Charlotte Observor had an article several weeks ago that stated:
One half of Union County, NC, public school students are Hispanic.
It also stated that 2/3 of property taxes collected in the county go to
    support public education.
If you do the math, that means that 1/3 of the property taxes that Union County residents pay goes to educate Hispanics!

When is America going to wakeup and really do something? These numbers are representative of all schools districts from coast-to-coast, and north to south. I wish this would stop being viewed as a local or an isolated issue. This is the slow and steady take over of America. And what the Hispanics don’t take Islam will. (Will the Mexicans get to use the footbaths?)

First, let me say I am very anti illegal immigration. Having said that, I think this thread needs to be careful about assuming Hispanic and illegal are the same thing. My husband is a third generation American citizen of Hispanic origin. There are many Hispanics and Latinos who are citizens and are American first and foremost. We need to be careful or we will be guilty of being racist just as our critics are charging.

Your point is noted and agree with. But I see with only 1 post that you may not realize that what you noted is really how we feel here. We are not against any group, especially for the sake of just being from a group. We are against illegal groups and or people. Please understand that our comments are about their legal status not their ethnicity. And something we cannot do anything about is that Hispanic illegal immigrates are currently the biggest problem so most comments will be in that direction. And not every comment can or will be screened as you wish. We just know that that is what we are talking about.
But also please be aware that a number of Americans that are Hispanic by origin are sympathic to the illegal immigrates cause, and being American dose not come first for them.

    By the way – welcome!
