CUSTOMS: Immigrant used dead man's identity

CUSTOMS: Immigrant used dead man's identity

Undocumented immigrant said he had been using dead McAllen man's ID for the past 20 years

    Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at 3:12 p.m.

An undocumented immigrant is behind bars after he allegedly used the identity of a dead man from McAllen for the past 20 years.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials said the incident happened at the Gateway International Bridge on Satuday afternoon.

In a statement released Wednesday, customs officials said they charged Jorge Andres Yanez-Garcia is being harced with making a false claim to U.S. citizenship.

The 54-year-old Mexican national was the passenger in a vehicle crossing the international bridge between Brownsville and Matamoros.

Court documents show that Yanez-Garcia allegedly presented a Florida driver's license under the name Roberto Zamarano, Jr.

Yanez-Garcia was sent to secondary inspection where officials learned his true identity through a fringerprint database.

Customs Officials said in their statement that they discovered the real Roberto Zamarano, Jr. had died.

Yanez-Garcia told investigators that he had been living in Bradenton, Florida and had been using Zamarano's papers and identity for the past 20 years.

Well, I am pleased that my identity will carry on after my death. I just hope I will be able to vote against amnesty for illegal aliens after I am gone.

This is simply amazing that an illegal invader could get away with this for 20 years. Not only that, he was brazen enough to attempt to cross back into the US using this stolen identification after his little siesta in mexico! Must be another one of the invaders who's "living in the shadows!"

Doesn't Florida require a fingerprint when one gets a Florida drivers license? Oh, did this guy ever vote in that 20 years he was utilizing this stolen identification? I want to know if that is the case! If so, they need to prosecute him for voter fraud as well! Shouldn't be to difficult to verify since dead men, generally, do not vote...

"But your Honor, the guy is dead so he's not using it......"

NoBueno, as a FL driver, I have never had to give a fingerprint. Infact, I just renewed my license in FL over the Internet, which will expire in 2013, even though I am in NC. While I had to get an NC license plate for the buggy, my license is valid, with my NC address with a little pasted piece on the back of the original. Now as a US citizen with a totally valid registered identity and paper trail, I am apparently a citizen in two states. Didn't the 9/11 WTC bombers have five or six driver licenses from various states? We have the computer wherewithall to figure out what is going on, but because of red tape and interagency snarkiness, the resources we have in place are not used.
