Bush suggests lack of guest-worker program could trigger labor shortages

Associated Press - July 19, 2007 3:53 PM ET

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - President Bush has sharply challenged critics of his stalled immigration-overhaul efforts, suggesting that failure to pass a guest-worker program could trigger a labor shortage in the United States.

The president, speaking today in Tennessee, said he was disappointed about his immigration bill's demise in the Senate. But he reiterated his support for a guest worker program and a path toward citizenship for many of the 12 million illegal immigrants now in country.

The president predicted that without a guest-worker program, and with stricter enforcement at the border, people are going to be saying "`Man, we're running out of workers.'"
