Assembly Approves Immigration Legislation

SACRAMENTO The Assembly has voted for a resolution calling on President Bush and Congress to reject extreme immigration laws.

Lawmakers voted along party-lines today on the nonbinding resolution. It asks Congress to stand up to extremist voices that drove the immigration debate in the U-S House of Representatives.

Democrats say Congress should give an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants a path to citizenship. But Republicans insist illegal immigrants should not be rewarded for breaking American laws.

President Bush is pushing a measure that calls for stronger enforcement, a new guest worker program and an eventual chance at citizenship for most illegal immigrants.
