A member of Gov. Bob Riley's state task force on illegal immigration urged a Republican group this week to push lawmakers to require businesses to verify that their workers are legal.

Elois Zeanah, chairwoman of the Alabama Federation of Republican Women's illegal immigration issues committee, said an online program called "E-Verify" is only voluntary for businesses in Alabama now.

The program is free and helps determine employment eligibility of workers and the validity of Social Security numbers, she said.

"Demand the Alabama Legislature pass E-Verify this year," she said. "Mississippi passed it last year."

Zeanah, who was appointed to Riley's illegal immigration panel in September 2007, spoke Tuesday to the Republican Women of Huntsville.
