Nicaraguan native Luis Enrique, who just won a Grammy for best tropical album for Ciclos, talked about his struggle to carve out a music career while living in the USA as an illegal alien.

He was 15 when the Sandanistas were battling for dominance in Nicaragua. He fled to the States in 1978.

"War in my country was escalating by the day," Enrique says. "As a young kid, you just want to get away from it all. I was not allied with anyone, and I'm still not.
"I did not speak English. I did the best I could. I finished high school, but I couldn't go to college because I was illegal."

Signed to CBS Records in 1987, he gradually built a following in both the pop and Latin worlds, and became a U.S. citizen. "Illegal aliens have all the rights in the world to dream and make those dreams come true," Enrique says. "I'm proof of that." — Edna Gundersen
